RE: KSU Womens Golf 2016-2017 - Roster & Schedule
The women finished the first two round of the Mercedes-Benz Challenge in Tennessee in 2nd place with the final round now underway. Live Scoring
Pimnipa Panthong is tearing things up at 7-under par thru 36 holes and leads the tourney.
(She also has birdied two of the first three holes today to move to -9 and open up a 4 shot lead.)

See I told you young teams can do real well if the talent is there. The women's team should make the NCAA finals and if they can get over their early jitters (that can be a young teams issue, I'll admit that one) that have caused them problems for two years in a row.

Women Set Records in Texas Tourney
Quote:The No. 15 women's golf team once again put fresh ink in the record books with a second place finish at the Jim West Challenge, at the par-72 Fazio Course at Carlton Woods, finishing with a three-round score of 17-under par 847 (286-283-278).
The standout tournament was highlighted by a 10-under par team performance Monday. Kent State tied the program-record for a 54-hole tournament, shooting under 850 as a team for the first time since April of 2006. Kent State finished seven strokes back from No. 4 Florida State, but defeated the rest of the field at least six strokes. Besides the winners, only No. 10 Miami finished within 10 strokes of Kent State. The second-place showing now pushes Kent State's record to 6-5-1 against top-25 nationally ranked teams.
Individually, Pimnipa Panthong had the best round of any golfer in program history Monday to break her own set of records. Panthong finished second overall by one stroke at 12-under par 204, beating her previous record by a stroke. Her Monday score of nine-under par 63 passed the old program-best mark by two strokes. Panthong had 10 birdies in round three, six on the back nine.
Senior Wad Phaewchimplee also had an outstanding tournament, finishing in a tie for sixth at five-under par 211. It was the second best 54-hole score in the collegiate career of the decorated senior. Phaewchimplee shot an even par 72 Monday following two under par rounds. Defending tournament champion Michaela Finn was a stroke back from Phaewchimplee in a tie for eighth. She shot a 68 on Monday, with seven birdies, to finish at four-under par 212.

I would say the freshman is pretty good. I hope she stays for four years.

Fantastic comeback in Texas! From GOLFWEEK:
Quote:Kent State won on six occasions in the 2015-16 season, so it was only a matter of time before the Golden Flashes would reach the winner’s circle again.
It took four events and a spirited comeback to happen, but the team got what they wanted.
The Golden Flashes, No. 13 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, fired a 4-under 284 Tuesday at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, moving them to a 2-under total at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin. That was enough to shoot Kent State from eight behind No. 12 Miami to one in front, as the Golden Flashes earned their first title of the season in stunning fashion (as well as successfully defend at the Betsy Rawls event).
Leading the way for Kent State was Michaela Finn, who posted three consecutive sub-par rounds on the way to a solo second (at 7 under). Pimnipa Panthong, who has emerged as one of the nation’s best freshman thanks to a career-opening win and a second two events later, put on another stellar performance with bookend rounds of 67 and 68 for solo third (6 under). Panthong entered the event No. 14 in Golfweek‘s rankings.
“We were so proud of the way they all competed this week,” said Greg Robertson, Kent State’s head coach. “They played hard until the end, never gave up, and made some birdies on the last few holes to come out on top by a shot. Michaela and Pim just played exceptionally well throughout the tournament. This is a young team, but they’ve grown up quite a bit in the last month and a half. It’s certainly a great way to end the fall.”

21 days until the 1st tournament of the spring season for KSU Women's Golf team. I just realized that the MAC Tournament is @ Silver Lake Country Club. I can't remember the MAC Tournament for Women's Golf ever being that close to Kent OH.
With the strong fall that the ladies had (finished #15 in the national rankings by Golfweek), they will be the strong favorite to win the MAC again.

Finished sixth with a fairly significant gap to 1-5th places. Not a bad start though.

Kent finished tied with Furman for second place one stroke behind North Carolina St. Kent tied for the second best round of the day. Unfortunately NCSt hade the best round by seven strokes. They made a nice charge to nip us at the end.[/b]

One of the Nielsen sisters is playing. I think that's a first except for some tournaments that allowed six players.
