New commit-don't like him already

Anyone see this yet? Why the hell would you commit just to wait on another team to offer. That's where there's bad guidance on the coaches behalf. If you know the kid really wants something else don't encourage him to commit. If I were Rod I'd pull the scholly.

So that you know you have a place to play if the school you want to offer never does.

Then that is not a commitment. I wonder how his fiancé will feel when he tells her that they will get married unless someone better comes along before the wedding

This is the case with almost every verbal commit to a MAC school. Of course a lot of them are waiting for a P5 offer, that's why we always lose a couple at the end. So atleast he's honest...
However, another athlete over 6'3" and he definitely can lay the wood. I love me some tall DBs!

It is a two way street until the player signs the contract. Many times a school wants you to the very end and you want them. Then the days before signing the school will say we are sorry because we just found somebody better. Everybody plays that game, even NIU.

Yeah, it's just being honest. If there's a de-commitment, it really doesn't matter if they were upfront, honestly. The coaches can take off, so I don't feel bad for the players being able to.

It's interesting. When you "commit" to anything, there is the assumption that your intention is to follow through on the stated commitment. This young man, however, submits his verbal commitment, then immediately schedules a visit to New Mexico to see what they have to offer.
So there really is no commitment - he's just bought an insurance policy with NIU in case nothing better turns up. I don't necessarily have a problem with that, per se. We have all at some point had a backup plan to something in life when we aspired for a better option. Choose your own analogy.
For me, it's just the semantics. It's kind of embarrassing for NIU to announce that a kid has "committed" when he is actively seeking alternate options, and not shy about letting the media know.

I hear ya. The problem is the "commitment problem" goes both ways. While I think it is far more common for the player to pull out of their commitment, schools sometimes do the same. It gets really complicated if you think about the player committing to a school with the intention to get a degree there, and then they are not as good as the coaches thought or they get hurt and the commitment from the school vanishes. The whole thing is pretty messed up. Not sure how you fix it, but it seems broken to me.

Of course...it's the principal of the matter. Kid doesn't have to be so intrepid showing his lack of interest.
Here's an example. We all know SF is perhaps months away from a more prestigious job offer correct? At the same time, NIU offers him a four year contract extention for which SF reluctantly signs. At the press conference, he tells the media "Ya well the contact is nice, but what I'm really excited for is a P5 school to come buy out my contract so I can be into better things. But this will do in the meantime. "
It just doesn't depict class and the coach knows better. You might see it as honestly, I see it as being ungrateful. That's the same dude who transfers out of NIU his first year because he wasn't a starter his freshman season. It's a matter of respect.

Trust me, I feel exactly the same way as you do and I think it's BS. A lot of kids don't have the same values and principals that us older guys grew up with. However, I was just pointing out the fact that I'm recruiting this is just how it works unfortunately. Every kid has an ego and dreams of playing in the P5 conferences. When it gets to this point of the year and they haven't got that offer yet and classes are starting to fill up they will pull the trigger on the verbal but still hope for the big offer. Again I don't agree w it, just pointing out that this is unfortunately very common in recruiting

You're OK with STF lying because it shows class.
But you're not OK with a 17 year old high school kid telling the truth because it doesn't show class?

It is just semantics. Of course it is not a true commitment. NIU typically recruits students who want to be here but to compete w PJ and his over-committed recruiting classes (wmu just announced 3 kids left the program this week) seems like we may be stretching our offers to kids who may not be here come January.

The revenue sports in college are pretty scummy. It's just kinda how it is. You've got to have a tight grip on your nose when you watch.

What this kid is doing is perfectly fine. Would you prefer he flip like Alec Ingold and catch everyone by surprise? This isn't a "my word is my bond" situation. He doesn't have an allegiance to NIU. We love NIU, he doesn't. There's nothing personal about it. Just business. what he's doing is probably bad for him, but he's being honest.

I think that when Carey recruits a guy it is very important that the kid really wants to attend NIU. This prospect is from Mo., so I assume Kevin Kane is involved with this person. I think there is a sea change developing in our recruiting process. I think that the 2 new coordinators have come from a couple of big programs. I think they are willing to reach a little for talent alone. I have noticed height and speed are a common thread in this class. The times, there are 'a' changin'! After all, recruiting is very subjective, there really is no right or wrong these days.

Yes, that is correct.
You can look at it as just lying, but it is also called commitment. This ******* feels shunned. He does NOT feel he has something to prove. He feels he HAS proved himself. I would even put the probability at more than 50% he gets no other offer, and about 75% he doesn't complete 4 yrs at NIU if he enrolls. Obviously not a kid who has all the talent in the world or else he would be signed somewhere else. He acts humbled, but people see through it. If he does go to a P5 he will be in the mix and likely have no idea how to deal with those with at least the same, if not more talent. And at least some will have their head screwed on straight. He'll be at Jefferson St. CC if he is lucky.

He will also probably commit domestic abuse, academic fraud and take illegal booster support if he's willing to give a verbal commitment while still keeping his options open. You sure are shredding this kids integrity for whom you don't know. It sounds like this is all new to him and he's figuring it out as he goes. This so-called want to be at NIU is not Some magic litmus test. For many kids NIU's just the best or only offer they received. That's why they "want" to be a Huskie.

Questions for those people that know the recruiting methods of NIU.
Have NIU coaches ever changed their mind on a verbal commitment of a player? Do the coaching staff have more verbal commitments that scholarships?
Everybody knows a verbal commitment is nothing until the signing day signature. It is a two way street, a verbal commitment or an offer can be pulled at any time.
