I think this means we're looking past the Big 12 and setting our sights on the PAC-12. Amirite or amirite?

Option 1: Joe Karlgaard is a smart guy with good sources of information and there are solid reasons for us not to be on this list. OK by me.
Option 2: Joe wanted to make a pitch but the Admin shut him down. I'm not ok with this but it wouldn't surprise me.
Option 3: Joe couldn't figure out how to get on a list that has Arkansas St. This did not happen.

Agree with the above 100%.

Likely Option 1.

If making a pitch expends time and money that he felt might better be spent on other endeavors (replacing Boise State in MWC or someone else in AAC?) then it becomes an economic decision.

Out of that list of 17, there are at least 7, and probably more, that have no realistic chance at being invited. At some point the schools at the bottom end of the spectrum are not realistically building up 'attaboy for trying points' with the networks, they are just spending money.

The networks and Big 12 have said that athletic budget, alumni base and appeal to TV markets are driving factors.

If a job description says you need a masters or better in mechanical engineering, showing up with a degree in elementary education is non-responsive. Doesn't mean your degree has no value, or you will not have a job, but you're not going to be considered now, or in the future, for the engineering position. You need the right degree first.

Two years from now no one will be able to recreate an accurate list of these 17 schools without doing searches for this thread.

I would agree that if you are in the top 6 to 8 (maybe 10 if they were taking 4 schools) contenders, and you have the profile they've publically said they are looking for, you have every reason to be making a pitch.

Per Brett McMurphy ... an 18th school was added to the list - Air Force.

Sounds like anyone who asked to be on the list made the list. Arkansas St., Northern Illinois, San Diego State, New Mexico, Temple? Seriously? The Big 12 would be laughed off the map if they invited any of those schools. And one could almost make the same claim about USF, Colorado State and SMU.

Consequently, I agree 100% with Brookes Owl's analysis, with one exception-- I'd rule out her option #2. Had JK desired to make a pitch and the Administration shut him down, I think it would have been the last straw with Joe (after getting his hands tied on the Bailiff situation after last season).

I know Joe has been proactively working both the AAC and MWC for the past year, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's also been in regular contact with his friends in the Pac-12. He no doubt recognizes that UH has a big leg up on us with the Big 12, and he knows that it's inconceivable they'd select two schools from the Houston market. My guess is he's hedging his bets elsewhere, and working the phones really hard to ensure once the dust settles, we're at the top of the AAC's and MWC's candidate list for back filling.

Las Vegas Review Journal reporting that UNLV has now expressed interest in joining the list.

Honestly, if JK is working the MWC and AAC saying look, we want to get IN to your conference, not OUT of it, I'm OK with that. It's not like we are going to leapfrog UH with UT, the governor, et al supporting them.

(Of course if JK knows we are already in and he doesn't *need* to make a presentation, I'm OK with that too. And I'm willing to bet a nickel that's the case.)

Well, I agree with your option #2 and your own disappointment if #2 was the one that came to pass. My only contention is that I don't think that option is what occurred since I think JK would have resigned if his hand were once again tied.

I don't think that's what Brookes was harrumphing about.

The same mythical "they" that has been crippling Rice athletics for decades strikes again!
