Pam Borton's new book " On Point,"details Tubby firing, Teague dysfunction
*Borton writes candidly of the 2012-13 season, after which she expected to be fired by Teague — who was in his first year on the job. Instead, it was Smith who was fired, after coaching the Gophers men’s team to an NCAA tournament victory.

“Tubby’s firing was a lesson in how not to do things,” Borton writes. “There wasn’t a communication plan in place and the conduct of the University was an embarrassment, full of disrespect, and a disgrace to a great man whose character, integrity and professionalism were unassailable.”

She describes the process in which Smith learned of his firing. “Tubby’s name was scrolling across ESPN’s sports-ticker at the bottom of the television screen and his phone was ringing off the hook before the athletic director gave him the news. … He was asked to vacate the building that day and his office belongings and boxes would be delivered to his house.”

The process shook the entire department, Borton writes. “We recognized what type of atmosphere lay ahead for the rest of the staff and department ............

It's not like we've always had competence at the AD position, but even RC wasn't that bad.

que up the concession stand story...

i loved LF, but he brought a lot of the "concessions stand firing" upon himself. He had agreed to step down weeks before the concession stand. This story has a life of its own.

Most fans know the truth. But you can see how a reporter gets a sound bite and runs with it, and how a story can develop. Minnesota does this. We fire a coach at a hot dog stand. USC leaves Kiffin standing on the tarmac. Don't let background, context, and facts get in the way of a good story.

Come to think of it, these former AD's may be posting here.

LF insisted on signing the paperwork there instead of waiting until the next morning as RC suggested. One of Larry's closest friends admitted this later.

Larry still could have been handled with kid gloves. Admin had to know he was sick. He was slurring his words at that point.
