RE: NIU courting the BIGXII
Dear Bronco's,
Many of you know that Northern Illinois went searching for greener pastures several years ago. When it didn't work out, they came back to the MAC. The only thing they have to offer is a good football team, with about 15,000 fans per game. They do not have a Chicago market, and they would have to expand their stadium by 20,000 to 25,000.
One could argue that the market would change with inclusion into the Big XII, and that would help their position with the Big XII, but where is all the money going to come from for joining the Big XII, to expanding their stadium, to paying coaches, etc?
They have always been dreamers about leaving the MAC. As far as I'm concerned, let them go.

Perhaps emu should consider leaving for "greener pastures" as well. Is the GLIAC considering expansion?
Thanks.

Poor Ken. He comes in here to make some good points about NIU, and Chip fan comes in and trashes his team.
The state of State funding in Illinois is abysmal, and there have been talks of the other 'directional' schools in the state cutting athletics. NIU had a plan formulated in 2012, but it didn't go anywhere. I wonder what makes them think they have enough now to make the move.

Dear arrows80,
If you think your team is going to do anything this year, guess again.

NIU is an hour and 20 minutes from Chicago. Its not like Chicago cares about NIU. WMU could claim the Chicago and Detroit market just as easy as NIU could claim the Chicago market.

Yeah, but they're also LISTENING to Arkansas State, out of the Sun Belt. Doesn't mean that much.

At least the Chicago market likes to visit SW Michigan.

NIU courting the BIGXII
This Ken dude hatesssss NIU, it's kind of funny. Anyhow, we have zero chance of going to he BIG12 but the fact that they selected us to present to them is a positive. Much better of shot of replacing an AAC squad that they up taking like Cincy or Memphis

I didn't realize they had to select you to beg to join their conference in vain. If so, yes thrilling times for both NIU and Arkansas State.

Have to figure it's about promoting the brand as much as anything. Our AD at least does that, and is willing to at least dream of greatness, despite the realities. Might be a small step in advancing his own career too.

RE: NIU courting the BIGXII
I just remember the last time NIU had delusional dreams of grandeur, they wound up coming back to the MAC with their tails between their legs and were MAC bottom feeders for years until Novak turned it around. NIU is about as MAC as a MAC school gets, always will be, and don't get their urge to always bail on one of the most stable and tradition-rich conferences in the country. I guess they feel being in the "Chicago market" is enticing to those conferences with a better national perception, but nobody else really sees that as any benefit. Heck, Northwestern is a BIG school that actually IS in the Chicago market and they don't draw any big ratings and only get 25K in their stadium on Saturdays, which is still twice as much as NIU draws. The Huskies should do more to promote the conference where they belong instead of taking on this ill-advised superiority complex whenever they achieve a few years of success in football.

It never hurts to articulate a vision for bigger things. My only concern is MAC schools hoping around to CUSA or AAC after the Big XII raids. I never really minded losing Marshall, UMass or UCF but I would hate to see us lose the geographic continuity we have now.

Exactly. The MAC is and always has been, "The Michigan/Ohio Bus League". If you're not moving forward your moving backwards. Obviously the string of success we've had for the past decade isn't going to last forever and with all the realignment going on you can't blame NIU for trying to capitalize on it. Like I mentioned before, the BIG12 isn't going to happen, but the AAC could be realistic when those teams leave for the BIG12. The lowest revenue teams in the AAC are far above the highest in the MAC. If NIU is dreaming big and wants to get to a P5 conference one day they have to make the jump to the AAC first and follow TCUs game plan. Staying in the MAC doesn't help anything. Not saying any of this is going to happen but I think that's what the logic is here coming from our AD. Obviously the possibilities are exciting as a fan but that's all it is until something actually happens
