RE: NIU courting the BIGXII
NIU is never going to be P5 "one day". It's a ludicrous pipe dream, comparable to those who want WMU as a future member of the Big 10. How would NIU get the huge jump in funding to be a competitive P5 program? Increased donations from your big booster base? Increased public funding from your fiscally flourishing state? Is it from the same place that you'll get the $20 million additional funds a year you'll need just to be competitive in the AAC? It's as feasible as me saying I'd like to take an orbit around Jupiter someday. Yes, maybe both possible at some point, but not in this century.

RE: NIU courting the BIGXII
I'm just curious how you think jumping to the AAC would be any different than when you jumped to the Big West in the early '90s. See the same thing happening - your athletic department gets shredded from the increased budget demands and travel while your state creeps closer to bankruptcy, not to mention the decrease in fan interest while playing schools like Tulane and Tulsa. Any increased conference revenue would be minimal. So you wind up begging to come back to the midwest's MAC where you belong again within five years. Tell me why that wouldn't happen.

It's a LOT different. What's wrong with you? Are you nervous they might just succeed?

The tv revenue and bowl sharing money alone is worth the attempt. The landscape has changed a LOT since the 80's. LOL.

How does the AAC's TV contracts and bowl tie-ins currently compare to the MAC? And what will they be like when bigger-name programs like Houston and Cincy bolt from the AAC?

If you’ve ever wondered why universities are constantly switching conferences, the answer is simple: Money. If a school is hoping to generate the highest possible amount of revenue from its athletics, then it always pays to be among the major players in the land of college sports. For if you were under the impression that all conferences were created equal — from a financial standpoint, that is — you’d be sorely mistaken. And Forbes has the numbers to prove it.

As its done in years past, Forbes has crunched the numbers to see how college conferences compare to one another with regard to how much revenue they’ve generated. Looking at the 2014-15 fiscal year, Forbes analyzed the figures according to the three biggest revenue streams in college sports: football bowl games, the NCAA Tournament and conference TV deals.

ADVERTISING

“Bowl game revenue is a combination of money from the College Football Playoff, which distributed some $400 million among ten conferences last year, and contract bowls,” writes Forbes staff member Chris Smith. “The NCAA Tournament’s prize money system operates on a six-year rolling period, with conferences receiving around $250,000 per tournament game played over the last six seasons.”

With regard to the TV money — which comes from massive rights fees and, occasionally, profit sharing from conference network partners — Forbes did not average out the annual payout of television contracts, but rather estimated the TV revenue that was earned during the 2014-15 fiscal year.

While the major conferences all generated large quantities of money over the last year, it’s clear that some helped their individual member schools to bank more than the rest. And since it’s always interesting to see why colleges consistently jockey for position as if this was a real-life Game of Thrones, we decided to fill in the blanks by presenting you with the five most valuable conferences in college sports.

5. ACC

Total per member school: $22.1 million

Total: $331 million
Bowl games: $98 million
NCAA Tournament: $21 million
TV deals: $212 million
After watching the 2015 NCAA Tournament, there was no doubt the Duke Blue Devils proved themselves to be college basketball’s finest team. Yet, even with that individual victory, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) only managed to come in as the fifth most valuable conference in all of college sports.

The majority of the ACC’s money came from it’s $212 million in TV deals, followed by the $98 million associated with Bowl games and $21 million from appearances and games in the NCAA tournament. Under normal circumstances, it’s never fun to come in fifth place. However, there’s no shame in pulling in a total of $331 million over the last year, with each member school getting $22.1 million.

We do somersaults for getting 1.2 million from the Gary Fund and play cold Tuesday/Wednesday weeknight games in front of 100 of our closest family members in the MAC.

That's the ACC, Moomba. Not the AAC, where NIU wants to go. Umm, big difference.

Yeah, sure is, I'm going to hit up their tv revenue. I wouldn't even consider that a lateral move.

NIU gets into AAC - their athletic department will LOVE paying to send Volleyball, Baseball, etc. to Philadelphia, Florida, Carolina, etc.

And the other schools will look forward to sending their non-revenues to DeKalb, too.

A chance at joining the AAC when they have vacancies is why NIU made a pitch to get into the Big 12, at least according to Huskies fans. And Anybody who confuses the AAC with the ACC doesn't get to call anyone else on here a spaz. Lol.

I wouldn't think BIG12 and AAC are in the same conversation, except around this board. This conversation is RANDOM.

The entire conversation about NIU has been about Big 12 and AAC.

You have no idea what you're babbling about, as usual.

The nice thing about the AAC is that a majority of their teams are in big cities so travel is a bit easier that way. Definitely not comparable to the Big West in the 80s...

Philly, Dallas, New Orleans, Orlando, Tampa, Cincy, Memphis, Houston, etc...

Travel definitely goes up but so does exposure. Playing in those cities would definitely help recruiting as well IMO

They left the MAC to go independent. You can argue about how much sense that made - though I've read that it had to do with the MAC not offering enough scholarships or something, don't know the whole story on that. They only ended up in the Big West when the Independence thing didn't work out. Going to the AAC would be more promising than going independent. Would be a significant increase in costs though, and I don't know how that compares to how much more money we'd get being in the AAC.

Quite honestly, I think it's a wash as far as exposure between MAC and AAC. Both have similar TV contracts and bowl tie-ins. The only difference is that the MAC has to rely more on the mid-week games to get their brand out there nationally.

I agree for formalities for having a speech toward the B12, if the B12 takes more than 2 from the AAC, NIU will have a good chance to be taken to that conference.

RE: NIU courting the BIGXII
Speaking exclusively with respect to WMU.

Does anyone think conference affiliation has much bearing on academic identity?

Would a different conference eliminate the "directional" tag? With the directional tag, I have always felt that some could unfairly link WMU to the other MAC Michigan schools.

I like to use the University of Cinci example. Without doing a ton of research, it appears that Cinci (for years) gets more respect as a college (in whole) due to being affiliated with a better marketed conference, than the likes of the good academic MAC Ohio schools, who unfairly get linked to the poor academic Ohio MAC schools. (sorry for the run on sentence) Ohio is an interesting state, due to having the giant: Ohio State; then the next step down: Cinci; followed by Xavier and Dayton...then the MAC Schools...plus a lot of great small liberal arts schools like Oberlin, etc.

...countdown to Ken Barna and others inserting themselves...1...2...3...

I would think we would be more attractive. We have a better name brand. Just my $.02
