Told 12 is a safe middle ground and means that Big 12 feels reasonably confident about its future and possible new media interest come 2024.

Why all the presentations? Told Big 12 feels if school expressed interest, deserves chance to make a case. Could help schools on bubble.

Chuck Carlton ‏@ChuckCarltonDMN · 8m8 minutes ago

Not expanding would be a PR disaster after public announcement. Only reasons not to: if huge TV extension in works or lack of consensus.

Chuck Carlton ‏@ChuckCarltonDMN · 12m12 minutes ago

Told that 12 or 14 both remain options for conference, zero far less likely. Fourteen means more $$$$, bigger footprint, more stability.

Video presentations by schools to Big 12's Bob Bowlsby should run a couple of hours each. Told at least 14 schools. ESPN reported 17 today.

Sorry, who is reporting that NIU is now one of the teams making a presentation?

And no, they weren't specially invited by the B12. None of the schools were. The B12 basically made a public cattle call to anyone that wanted to apply. Tulsa could've applied, and at this point would probably get the same Skype interview.

The Big 12's biggest expansion winner so far? Skype.

By the way: who the heck is Chuck Carlton??

EDIT: thanks Google, he's the Big 12 beat writer for the Dallas Morning News. OK -- that's legit!

OK St head coach Gundy makes comments against Houston: http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/os...b5c47.html

Oh weird, a B12 school outside Texas -- that heavily recruits Texas -- coming out against adding another Texas school???? Never saw that one coming.

Stay Cool,

You are absolutely correct. I was absolutely wrong.

Thanks

Nonetheless, for all intents and purposes -- NDSU could've applied and Bowlsby probably would give them a Skype interview too.

Iowa St probably gets higher viewership in Chicago than NIU. No offense ...

Does anyone happen to know if he is male or not? Also his age, and whether or not we can make fun of him instead of athletes

This is false. But if it was true, another good thing to pitch. But again...this is false.

My apologies. Please don't get the thread closed for making it "another NIU pissing contest".

I so rarely comment on this board. But come on man, NDSU probably gets more viewers in Chicago that Iowa State does. You ever meet anyone from Iowa State? I've met two (and I live in Chicago), and one didn't watch football and the other rooted for Iowa.

05-stirthepot Well, if ESPN and Fox want to cut expenses to off set the B12 expansion, they can kill the AAC! How? By adding six(6) AAC schools:

Central Florida
Cincinnati
Connecticut
Houston
Memphis
Temple or South Florida or East Carolina

I think Cincy has already been assured a spot and they know it, which is why they've been so quiet lately. It may just be Ono leaving, but the Cincy camp had previously been quite vocal in selling themselves as the best available school. That has ceased from what I can tell, which tells me they've been told to just sit back and relax.

This is just my opinion, could be wrong. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see the B12 stay at 10 and all of this be a 100% money grabbing, negotiating play, at the expense of G5 schools' dreams.

It would actually be hilarious if after all this drama if the Big12 simply successfully shakes down the networks for more money to stay at 10.

My guess is the compromise in all of this will be to simply add 2 schools. If BYU is in the mix then probably BYU and UC, if the Big12 does not think BYU passes the smell test then UC and Houston.

The response of the networks to the proposed expansion throws a whole new wrinkle into this. If expansion moves forward, as it likely will, I expect that the networks will pick the new members or they will refuse to pony up any new money.

The networks care about markets and not much of anything else. Houston is far and away the best market of any of the proposed candidates with a population of 6.6 million. But a network has to ask how much of that market Houston will actually bring.

1. A&M already has a big chunk of that market.
2. There is already NFL competition in that market.
3. Texas already brings some of that market to the Big XII with its alums who live there.

So what is Houston really adding?

I also have to question whether the networks will view Cincinnati with the same enthusiasm that the Big XII has. The networks really don't care about a bridge to West Virginia. Cincy doesn't bring Ohio; OSU already has that locked up. Cincy brings a corner of Ohio with a population of about 2.1 million, and a corner that has NFL competition to deal with. Compare that to USF with a population almost 50% greater (3 mill) or UConn with a population of 3.7 million and no instate competition from either college or pro. I have a feeling that the networks will like either of them better and won't care about the travel distance to Connecticut. And they won't be bullied by Texas either.

Fox isn't in Houston so why do they care about any of those properties that they don't own?

There is NFL competition in these markets that have P5 teams. Wisconsin, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, New York (Twice), Pittsburgh, Oakland, San Francisco, Boston, Charolette, Miami, Cleveland, Dallas, Arizona, Seattle, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Denver, Baltimore. So every city except Cincinnati, San Diego and Jacksonville pretty much.

Offset expenses? Seriously? The entire AAC makes less than one B12 school. That's not going to help - nice try though.

Gundy prolly has more reason to be concerned about Houston than any other school in the conference. Reason being if the XII goes to North/South divisions, the addition of Houston moves oSu to the northern division.
