AP started ranking college football in 1936. All-time, Rice came in at number 69 out of 100. Southern Miss was at 72; Marshall at 91. Those are the only current C-USA teams to make the Top 100 list.

AP and UPI & others divided and classified all schools as "Major" or "Small college" and published weekly rankings in each category. Those in small college category did not receive votes in the major college category regardless of their record. USM, for example, beat Alabama in the first game of the season for both back in about 1953 at which time Ala was ranked #1 in both major polls. Although USM won they were not ranked in the major college poll the next week although #1 in small college which DOES NOT COUNT IN this article. They won natl championship in small college other times but never ranked in the major poll category. They didnt start earning points per this ranking until being classified as Major sometime around 1962. If they had been major all along them they would have been elegible for the major poll whereby they could possibly be ranked higher than 72. Any others in that same situation?

MT was ranked #1 in (what is now) FCS for a while. I think we finished the regular season at #1 a couple of times. So that polling didn't count I believe.

Did you have to ask your grandfather about the last time Rice was ranked? Don't believe your father would remember...

If Rice plays a football game, and no fans are there to see it, did they actually play?

So let's see. ODU has only played football for seven years, and during that time was ranked 18 separate weeks in the FCS top 25. By extending that seven-year rate across the 50-year period in question, the Monarchs would have 205 top 25 appearances, bringing them in at No. 44. To quote a poster whose name shall not be mentioned; if, if, if, if, if, if, ...

I was there when we beat Marshall for the 2013 championship so yes, they actually played.
