It would have had more money per team due to the buy-in period. It would have not had a "psychological disadvantage." It would have deprived the ACC of an excellent expansion target when Maryland went to the BIG, significantly weakening a rival conference. It would have provided enough teams to lump together tier 3 content into a conference network - Texas. It would have weakened the Pac 12 by penetrating the Phoenix media market.

The Big 12 waiting cost it in a huge way.

BYU wasn't in the running 5 years ago. They should have taken WVU, UofL and Cincy. The three best FB members of a BCS conference.

BYU was a Big 12 possibility 5 years ago, there were talks that broke down before they invited West Virginia (Sunday play? BYU guys were jerks? Dunno).

AT the time, I figured the likeliest Big 12 play was Louisville and Rutgers, getting UT and OU into the NYC market, with a huge David vs Goliath cabbies vs cowboys culture clash matchup if Rutgers ever got good.

This. The Big 12 would have been rolling and the ACC would have been substantially weakened when Maryland left. My guess is UConn would have been the call.
