Would Cincy and Houston to B12 end P5 realignment?
I assume that, if all the parties agree to add Cincy and Houston to the Big XII now, that ESPN and Fox would prefer an extended GoR and contract, but would settle for removing the "pro rata payment for additions" clause in the current contract. That would bring the total number of schools in the P5 (+ ND) to 67 - four more than the number of schools in the BCS when it was created in 1998.

Would that end P5 realignment, at least until the expiration of the B12 contract in 2025? And if it does, is anybody working to find a drug that will cure withdrawal symptoms for people on internet forums like this one?

The Big 12 will ultimately end up just like the Big East. It will remain a power conference for the next 8 seasons, then lose it when Texas/KU and OU bolt to B1G and SEC. The backfill will lose its status.

G5 and mid-major basketball realignment should hold you until 2023.

Although a 4 team Big 12 expansion would create lots more adjustments throughout the rest of Division I than a two team.

Thats not necessarily the case. Fox could easily throw SEC type money at the Big XII and you'd see UT and OU stick around. KU is a secondary player in this whole thing. The future of the conference is in the Red River Rivalry. Even if OU bounces without UT and the Longhorns stick around it's still a power conference.

I think there is a good chance they both stick around add two more teams in 8 years to get up to that magical #14 that the other power conferences are sitting at and sign another GoR when they accept Fox's new offer.

I also see the Pac-12 become the Pac-14 with UNLV (if Vegas builds the Raiders that new stadium) and either Hawaii or Boise St.

PAC isn't taking Boise, unless they become a Cal Berkeley over night.

RE: Would Cincy and Houston to B12 end P5 realignment?
I don't think it would be the end of P5 realignment, but it would essentially end the calling up from the G5 into the P5 realignment. There just wouldn't be the need anymore. These conferences are big enough as they are, and, at some point, you have reached maximum capacity. Football conferences, with exception to Big 12, can't even play all their conference-mates in one season anymore.

You may see the consolidation of the Big 12 into the other power conferences, but I don't think you will see call-ups anymore.

So where is Texas going with the Longhorn Network?

The future of The Big 12 is in Texas (and to a lesser extent Oklahoma's ) hands. If they sign a GOR extension, The Big 12 will survive, if they don't The Big 12 will be no more. It's hard seeing a situation where Texas and Oklahoma don't test the free agency market in 2024.

Right now they wouldn't, but in 8 years and they realize they can't poach any teams from the Big XII and their options after the Runnin' Rebs is either Hawii, Boise or BYU they look at Boise a little more fondly.

Also they don;t need to become Berkley. They could realistically get closer to WSU level if the state decides they should be the top school in state.

Does Cal Berkeley of truck driving schools count?

If the three teams mentioned are the only losses, the backfill can make the conference p5 worthy. It will be stronger than the Big East and just as competitive against the new conferences. In addition, the teams have their own histories in other conferences. SMU/Houston/Cincinnati/etc

Unless there's an extended GOR the B12 is just running out the clock. The PAC is also not adding teams just to add teams, in the same way none of the other power leagues will either. There will be a big fight for Texas/OU/lesser degree KU among the power leagues and a few schools will get to ride the coattails. Those left in the B12 will then basically create the new AAC.

Exactly. Of all the D1 football playing schools in the West, Boise might be the PAC's last choice

The PAC is in a tough position. Either don't expand, expand with schools that have promise, give one last go at the XII gems, or scoop XII leftovers. It's not ideal, but it is the position they are in.

I could definitely see the cream of the crop from the PAC (athletics/academics) finding their way to the B1G with the remainder creating a new conference with the best of the rest out West.

I guess my answer is that, whether it stops actual realignment or not, it's not going to stop speculating about realignment. What was I thinking?

Right, nothing will stop the speculating/fantasizing about goofy four-time-zone conferences or West Texas A&M and Valparaiso joining P5 conferences. 07-coffee3
