Looks like they picked Memphis to rate as the first candidate. Looks like some actual research was done, not just opinion.

Wow. An objective article that really looks at the facts and upside potential and doesn't just bash Memphis based off of bias and unsubstantiated preconceived notions. Good read. Thanks.

Too bad that such journalistic attributes are so rare these days. That is a fair and balanced piece. This is the message being sent to the university presidents and AD's - not the garbage being spewed out in print and on the radio.

I hope you are correct. If not, we're probably screwed.

The quality of our brochures has risen quite a bit since RC was the AD. 04-cheers

Really nice find. Thanks.

I concur that it is a well researched and well presented overview of the UofM, and our strengths and our warts.

Quote:Rights and licensing is a bit of a different animal. Within the Big 12, Texas makes around $60 million off its licensing, which indicates a very large fan base. They are also not the only school in the Big 12 to do well. Oklahoma makes around $46 million, Kansas makes $36 million and even Iowa State makes $30 million in this category.

Memphis makes $9 million.

Considering how well Memphis basketball has done historically, I expected this to be higher, but either way it should increase considerably after joining a Power Five conference. The exposure alone will be many multiples more than what they receive today.

I think this is one of the failings of the previous administrations. It frustrates me to no end when I go to a site selling branded products and see schools like MTSU but don't see Memphis. It's slowly getting better, but you can't make money if you're not trying. I think this is something we should start demanding the school do more of.

Thanks for posting.

Memphis, like most schools, has a lot of positives and potential strengths which is why they are a candidate for the Big 12 (even outside of location).

Author though doesn't understand the difference between "Attendance" and "Football Stadium Seating Capacity"...which are the figures he noted, not "attendance".

If stadium capacity mattered...teams that play and/or played in NFL stadiums like Temple, Tulane (in the past), etc...or have large on-campus stadiums (Rice, BYU, ECU, etc...) would have been invited a long time ago.

I really enjoyed reading this early this morning. Even the negatives. Very well written.

Let us all keep showing how ready we are to upgrade not only athletics, but academics as well with all the continued snarky comments about people no longer associated with the university.

Did he write articles on the other schools as well? I couldn't find any links on the other candidates (only BYU had a link but it did not work). I would like to see how we measure up to the other candidates.

Memphis was the first in the series, so other candidates coming soon.

BYU has been added to their review and it brings out a number of things that do not make them look as strong as their perception IMO.

RE: Big 12 Fanatics- Expansion Candidates: Memphis breakdown
Fanatics' BYU review really brings them down a peg. Anybody know UM's rank on R&D funding list?

"And lastly, while the university’s academics rate well with undergraduate populations, there are some major concerns that BYU doesn’t really classify as a high research university. It ranks about 219th in R&D expenditures, below Texas State University and North Texas, not to mention other expansion schools like Memphis, who are also not known for their academics."

Also makes BYU's desperation to get in B12 this time understandable. Pac 12 will never want them, not a fit geographically or culturally with Big 10.

UCF is the latest school the B12 Fanatics site reviews. Good stuff:

It was beyond telling that the Pac-10 bypassed them for Utah to begin with.

When they inevitably expand to 14 (and it's not UT/OU) I'm guessing UNLV, and another. Will it be BYU, or will a school like San Diego State or CSU/Air Force be more attractive?
