Winning frees up a lot of things. Congrats to the Chips, gotta respect them and Cooper Rush can throw it a little. Solid program. Don't have to like, do have to respect.
Congrats to the Chips for what exactly? I mean, I'd love to be as mediocre as they are, but they aren't exactly lighting the world on fire.
You would give your left nut to have a Dan LeFevour/Antonio Brown era in EMU's recent past...you would settle for their recent bowl win. Let's not be coy.

Hence where I said "I'd love to be as mediocre as they are". Again, I ask...what exactly are we congratulating them for? Being really good 8 years ago?

As opposed to 30 years ago? Seriously, they were good last year and Cooper Rush will be holding a clipboard in the NFL in the very near future.

Jaylen Coleman for Toledo would be starting, yes.

A ton of athletes peak in high school and never transcend to the next level. Pretty typical in fact. Maybe Roback was a 'man among boys" in high school and is now just a "boy among men". His poor decision making would indicate a lack of maturing into his role on the team and maybe it is just what it is. Could be that he just doesn't possess the skills (mentally) to be a Division I quarterback. You can't display an attribute you don't possess.

It seems to me like people are jumping to a conclusion. The team has not released a depth chart or even played a game.

Eagle King sent me this a week or so ago, but it's the original depth chart from the media guide, and it's very inaccurate:
http://www.emueagles.com/sports/2016/7/2...spx?id=850
Not sure there is a new one out yet? Probably at the end of camp.

New one will come Monday 29th most likely. As they generally do for every game week.

I'm not jumping to conclusions at all. You may be jumping to conclusions in your response to me.
Roback really has not progressed since he has been at EMU. Many others have cited this fact and his continued shortfalls. No need to rehash that. Usually a starting quarterback with as much practice time and playing time as Roback has had shows improvement. My opinion is based on watching at home games, watching the televised games and listening to the games on the radio. The skill set he had in high school have not translated well at EMU.

Agree that he has struggled at times. He does need to improve the decision making.
He's only got 15 career starts and most of those were with an amazingly pathetic defense. Hard to fault a guy when he's down by 21 points in the 2nd quarter and is desperate to make plays. I'd rather see a QB that's over-aggressive than one that plays timid.
I've got a hunch that EMU's defense will be much improved this year so it'll be interesting to see how that effects the offense.

Agree with Nickle.
A QB playing on a team with a defense among the worst in college football isn't hardly a winning situation for him.
And last season once the OL got beaten up, it was very ineffective.

Guys, Porter will be the starter opening day. He is getting most of the first team reps in camp. Everything else is irrelevant.
Camp is pretty much done, mid next week. End of next week, preparations begin for MVSU. The following week is game week!

I like it.
I like when there is competition at the QB position and if the newcomer 'beats out' the returning starter, esp. if there are some differences in the styles of the QBs.
I see that more as a + than a - .
If the newcomer struggles as he probably will, the returning starter come back in.

I don't disagree regarding the O-line play or the defense. No argument there. Yet, even high school quarterbacks know enough to throw the ball out of bounds when there isn't a play to be had.
I am not writing these things to disparage Roback. I'm sure he's a fine person but it has to be said that not every quarterback who is outstanding or very good in high school will be successful at the collegiate level. That's not taking anything away from him. He "may" have limitations in that regard. I don't know. I would love for him to come out this season and be dominant. All he really has to do is play smart - not throw into coverage, not fumble the ball, make clean hand offs, etc. These are basic things every player who handles the ball has to do to make sure their playing time is secure.
You are right in saying that he has only played in 15 games at EMU. I get that. But...he didn't really show much improvement over the 2015 season. I can't help but think that is really has to suck going from such a good quarterback in high school to struggling at the next level, especially when you're used to success. I has to be a confidence breaker.
I wish him nothing but luck and hope he as a break out season in 2016.

Honestly though, not great for Roback's confidence. If Porter is the starter then this will be the second year in a row that Roback will start the season off the bench. It can't do much for his confidence. That means if Porter gets hurt or is ineffectual Roback will come off the bench, likely in a situation where the Eagles are behind, and he will feel the need to make "something" happen. This just feeds into the errors he was prone to make last season. We need a team therapist or psychologist to work with Roback on his fight or flight/ability to perform under pressure switch.

Or it means Roback isn't better than Porter. The best guy should be playing. If Porter can do what Reggie couldn't do, which was keep the defense honest with the pass, then he should thrive in our offense.
