Adam Coleman article on the new facility and what it means to Rice

Some quotes:

Quote:Shower time was like a game of Russian roulette in the Rice football team's former headquarters south of Rice Stadium.

Players didn't know what to expect, and the weather determined how comfortable or uncomfortable that shower would be.

Quote:Linebacker Alex Lyons, another fifth-year senior, said this changes how Rice operates on the recruiting trail long after he's gone.

"Now it's no longer, 'We're going to build this,' " Lyons said. "It's already built.

RE: Adam Coleman article on the new facility and what it means to Rice
I've been saying it all along that probably the biggest benefit from these facilities is going to be the perception that Rice is committed to its football program. Sounds like people inside the program agree with that as well.

Quote:"The focus will always be about the academics," Bailiff said. "What a Rice degree can do for you. But now we can walk into this facility with great pride and say 'Look what Rice University is committed to.' "

I also like the first part of the quote, which is something Ham talks about a lot.

Hopefully this facility and increased commitment will pay dividends for us in the long run.

Does anyone know if the weight equipment will be upgraded?

I'm pretty sure the weight room equipment is fairly new.

As a result, they moved most of it over to the new facility. I think they are going to buy new stuff to "fill it out."

My first instinct was that I wish the realignment quotes would have been a little more aggressive - but the more I read them they seem to reflect a reasonable tone.

Full confidence in JK, Tanner, and the team and hope for the best.

Really? Just doesn't look that new to me from the videos and pictures. I know that the Isgren Sport Performance center has shiny new stuff, but it looks to me that the equipment in the BP EZF is old.

I don't know what the useful lifespan of weight equipment is, but I think a lot of it is about five years old.

If it is just weights wouldn't you think they would last forever? What can happen to cast iron, other than rust? So a little paint....
The bars and things are pretty much the same I'd imagine. If it is a gym machine with moving parts, the joints, pulleys, etc. could probably use replacements at some point. If we are talking about style points, that is another matter. Recruits probably need to see some of the latest styles of machines, but the old stuff likely works just as well.

it's interesting that one of the players quoted perceives a "before the 3 bowls, old Rice football" and the "new Rice football"

To me, old Rice football was Cotton Bowls or other important bowls with Jess Neely.
