RE: Memphis state tribute during Kansas game
I saw a student with a sorority retro long t on last year that had Memphis State. She said they had them made, then got a "cease and desist" from the University for using the MSU stuff. I told her I still had some of the original stuff and she asked if they could have it to copy designs.
When they made the name change, I got a letter from the U saying they would send me a new diploma with the UofM name on it for $40. I passed on that.

The cease and desist letter was likely not specifically about them making retro MSU shirts but rather making shirts with trademarked University material...

Same here on the diploma. I wasn't happy at first, but in the long run it was a good decision.

That's exactly why.
Still, I love that the MSU throwback stuff is back now

The story that I heard was that V. Lane Rawlins thought that "State" had a negative connotation because of his days in the California public university system.
As I understand it, the "UC" schools (Cal-Berkely, UCLA, UC-Davis, UC-Santa Cruz, etc.) are higher up in the food chain than the "Cal-State" schools (Cal State-Fullerton, Cal State-Northridge, Cal State-Long Beach, etc.)

I think it was a wise move and should have been done decades before.

Wasn't a letter, it was a phone call. And it was specifically directed at Memphis State. The shirts were not for resale - just for personal use. They do it all the time and it's never a problem. The caller said they could not use MSU.

RE: Memphis state tribute during Kansas game
In truth the university should probably still be called Memphis State for in essence Memphis is a city state. The rest of Tennessee moves in a different direction than Memphis and would most likely prefer that Memphis be in a different state. Memphis has very little in common with the hillbillies in Nashville or Knoxville.

I don't disagree but I don't see why the name of the university should reflect that.

Memphis is not part of the Tennessee State system. There is no reason to be known as Memphis State.

The University of Memphis has never been part of the Tennessee State system.
