The WCHA competes better on a national level in hockey than the MAC does in football, basketball, baseball, or any other sport, yet some believe it to be a "beer league", and most others feel we are far too superior to stoop so low as the WCHA. Well a few of those poor pathetic losers in the WCHA have had very nice seasons, including NCAA bids, all while we have been trying to keep our "too-proud" heads above water in our super conference.
I have always loved the MAC, and have enjoyed wearing my mid- major chip on my shoulder. Never have I felt too-proud to be a passionate WMU Bronco, and have always felt that the MAC was the perfect conference for us.
The disparaging comments about the WCHA are a manifestation of both ignorance and "little-man-syndrome , and it is embarrassing hearing them come from WMU Broncos. Since when did we become so full of ourselves?
Only half of your prediction has come true though. We have not done a great job since joining the NCHC, but none of the current WCHA schools have had any real tournament success either. In the 3 years since the conference realignment, the WCHA has only had 2 NCAA tournament victories compared to 17 for NCHC teams.
This isn't MAC football where we are happy to just make it to a bowl, we actually have a chance at a national championship and need to put ourselves in the best position to achieve that. I do not believe the competition in the WCHA properly prepares a team for success in the NCAA tournament and the evidence backs up that theory.
I dont disagree with anything you have said, except that i predicted any specific level of NCAA Tournament success by schools in the WCHA. I have said many times that the WCHA is a "competitive conference", and it is. Indeed, it has had usually two or three teams within the Pairwise top 16, or just barely outside the top 16, during the three years since the big reorganization. That is decent, and far better than most on this board would like to give them credit for. But otherwise I agree with your comments. I simply have a difference in opinion about whether we have a BETTER chance of making NCAA Tournaments in the NCHC as compared to the WCHA.
I have never ever argued that the WCHA is a better conference. I do believe though it is a good enough conference, and that WMU, most years, has a better chance of having a very good season, and a better chance being one of the top two teams, and making the NCAA, if a member of the WCHA, than it does having a very good season, and being one of the top FOUR teams in the NCHC (which is where we would need to be to make the NCAA). What do you think? Is WMU more likely to be one of the top
two teams in the WCHA, or to be in the top
four teams in the NCHC?
The NCAA Hockey tournament is one of those that anything can happen. Getting there is the key. Ferris proved that, as have many other less heralded teams over the years.
The other key component of my argument has always been that once a program loses positive momentum, and starts having a few uninspiring seasons, in ANY league, enthusiasm for the program lessens, attendance falters, recruits are less attracted, and then things snowball, which just makes things worse. This was my fear, and still is.
I love Bronco Hockey, and drive several hours multiple times every year to attend games. I would love for WMU to take off in the NCHC, and become a perennial power. I would gladly eat crow, and will do so with a smile should WMU win the NCHC title and make a few runs in the NCAA. But I have an opinion as to what is best, and understand it clearly has and still does conflict with the majority. For this apparently I must pay.
