RE: Forbes article on Aresco dealing with expansion
It must be really easy being the SEC commish. I mean compared to Aresco. As SEC commish what is your biggest worry?

It seems like the AAC's next contract will tell us more about Aresco's job performance.
Huh? What else could we possibly judge him on as we sit here today? Could it change tomorrow or in a year? Sure.
That whole last deal was rushed. There were a lot of moving parts while Aresco was negotiating the last deal. Schools and a whole league (Boise State, SDSU and the Big East schools) where still exiting; while another school (Tulsa) was in the process of being added. Settlement exit fees were being sued for. ECU had to be made a full member and it wasn't clear if Navy was still coming, but after they nutkicked Boise State then it was clear that they were.
People forget how much stuff was going during the time that he was negotiating that last deal. That why I think that Aresco can't really be judged until the upcoming deal is made.
Moving parts like uncertainty over Big 12 expansion, fights between networks and falling cable revenue?
Expansion is something that is always going to be hanging over the AAC. Nothing that Aresco can do about that. However, this time around; he doesn't have stuff like a junior college trying to extort his league.

Less crazy stuff is happening now and now Aresco can point to the track record of the new league; which ESPN can't even deny, because they are the ones trying to kill the B12 expansion.
Excellent post. I'd add, the conference didn't even have a NAME while we were negotiating. American came afterwards. No big surprise we didn't get big $$$, but the short term/high exposure route was a very smart ploy by Aresco. He gambled we'd do well, and he'd renegotiate in just a few years. He was dead on right. Two BCS trophies and great ratings.
Damn shame we may never find out, but I'd love to know what our current lineup would have earned in round 2.
You may still find out, because I don't see ESPN overpaying. I can't see the B12 wanting to be at odds with ESPN; so this thing might just hang in the air for a while. Another thing that I was thinking about is that the schools leaving the AAC for the B12 are not the only financial issue that ESPN will have. ESPN is probably equally as concerned with the schools that will stay in the AAC; because their value would have been set at a much higher amount thanks to the B12 and Fox. Fox might bid on the AAC in the next deal just to drive up the amount that ESPN has to lay out.
Aresco made an interesting statement about staying at 10 and not wanting to dilute the brand. That has to be looking forward to the next deal.
