If you have HBO, watch this month's edition of Real Sports. The program covers the IOC and all their faults, the Rio Olympics and the problems caused by building the Olympics, and the sewage flowing into the bay where water events will be held.
This Olympics by all accounts is a disaster before it starts, overshadowing the performances before the first event. I know that they won't be talking about all of the problems during the competition, but it has been an embarrassment for the IOC, the Russian Federation, Brazil etc etc etc
Tragic really on so many levels. I'm betting you won't see the Olympics back in a 'not wealthy' country for quite some time
These are the games that beat out Chicago for host city, right?
I don't think the US currently even has any city preparing to bid for any future Olympic games, Summer or Winter.
I remember people made fun of the Atlanta Games in '96 and derided the Los Angeles games in '84 (for not building a lot of spectacular new facilities and stadiums) but both of those games made money. The hiccups of those two games will be looked at as minor compared to what's gong to happen in Rio. It sure won't look like this (video was filmed in Antigua, anyway.)

LA is bidding for Summer 2024 games against Paris, Rome and Budapest. Paris and LA are favorites.

Who was the last Rice athlete to win a medal at the Olympic Games?
Hint - it was in a different sport than the one that the student-athlete competed in at Rice.
Heather McDermid '91, who was a runner at Rice, won two Olympic medals as a rower for Canada: silver in 1996 and bronze in 2000. She was the bowman on the women's eight.
I think that makes her the only Rice alum to win more than one Olympic medal.

The Olympics should have one winter, one summer location. After first class facilities are built, the IOC then becomes a maintenance organization instead of a group of privileged extortionists.

2020 Olympics will be adding 5 sports to the program in Tokyo - baseball and softball will be returning after 12 years (maybe we'll have a Rice athlete in baseball as it will pretty much have to be an all-college team). They also added skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing (???) in an effort to be even more like the X Games I guess.
