The Inquisitr: Is Tulane a serious candidate for the Big 12?
http://www.inquisitr.com/3370147/big-12-...candidate/

Excerpt: ESPN writer Jake Trotter first reported the rumors as Big 12 expansion continues to unfold. While Tulane does not have a competitive football team, the Green Wave reside in New Orleans — a top 100 TV market. Additionally, the school is academically strong, a criteria that future members of the conference are expected to meet according to Oklahoma president David Boren.

Short answer: yes

Long answer: long shot but not as long as some of our other more eastern and southeastern brothers and sisters

If our old AD hadn't dinked around since Katrina we would have been a shoe in.

This board is completely szchophrenic about what is a big market. Here, a "Top 100" market with pro teams and LSU's dominance is large, but Hartford (30) and CT (20) aren't in others. OK.

Are people in Connecticut as sports crazy and eyes to the tube as people in Louisiana? (Honest question).

Generally, probably not. But we get damn good ratings across the three TV sports both in our own and adjacent markets. Without looking up data now, my guess would be that the CT viewer has more disposable income, which also needs to be factored.

Tulane is a serious candidate to join the Big 12…if it expands to 20 teams. If it is a two or a four team expansion, Tulane is well down the list.

Yeah, they're a serious institutional candidate. Athletically? Not so much. Overall, probably somewhere in the middle, and that's a good thing.

Tulane came up as a candidate before, don't forget. As did SMU. Those guys were both part of that group that eventually whittled down to WVU and UL. I suspect both SMU and Tulane are there again, applying for conference membership.

Tulane isn't in a bad spot, and the school has definitely put in some coin since Katrina, and have been able to stretch it further than others probably because the storm allowed them to get work done there perhaps a bit cheaper than others would in a metropolitan area. IIRC, the football stadium, basketball arena, practice facility, track/soccer, baseball stadium (pre and post-storm, though, post-storm was for fixes)...all have been addressed. I think they pushed it past $250 million?

Their trajectory was far easier to track back when those improvements usually came ahead of an invitation, as some sort of justification for improvements and projects to commence.

Tulane's projects were good enough for a Big East invitation. Are they still good enough for the Big XII?

RE: The Inquisitr: Is Tulane a serious candidate for the Big 12?
Since no one know exactly what the hell the Big XII wants (west coast? football-strong? tv markets?), then anyone is really a possible expansion candidate....

You could go full-on Gulf Coast Southern Football Big XII add-on....add Houston, Tulane, Memphis, and UCF

If you quit looking at other factors and recognize that southern football is where it's at, then those schools would be perfect

Big XII expansion is directed by what they want to do to add to their identity, and unfortunately, no one knows what that is

Tulane's athletic department is probably too weak to be a serious candidate at this point.

The Big12 could certainly make an argument that they are a growth candidate though.
