RE: Scott Filip in Thorpe Cup
Great 1st day for him. He looks to be at least 100 points ahead of his pace at the U.S. Olympic Trials. It also looked like he had a bunch of PR's today.

He may need a few more PR's tomorrow to hold off some of the Americans who are close to him. The guys in 2nd and 3rd ended up 6th and 7th at the Trials (Scott finished 10th).

RE: Scott Filip in Thorpe Cup
Filip continues to have a great meet, although his second day has some events that people can catch him some.

It's interesting to see how well he is doing compared to the Olympic Trials at the beginning of the month (when he finished 10th)

100 - Trials 10.75, Thorpe 10.63
LJ - Trials 7.37, Thorpe 7.57
SP - Trials 13.52, Thorpe 13.88
HJ - Trials 2.00, Thorpe 2.02
400 - Trials 49.08, Thorpe 49.07
110HH - Trials 15.00, Thorpe 14.92
DT - Trials 39.58, Thorpe 39.47 (the 1st event he hasn't improved upon from Eugene)
PV - Trials 4.55, Thorpe 4.75

JT - Trials 47.96, Thorpe 48.33
1500 - Trials 4:43.08, Thorpe 4:42.18

Harrison Williams of Stanford has now moved into 2nd with a solid PV result. He no-heighted in the PV at the Olympic Trials, but he was 5th in the decathlon at the 2016 NCAA Championships, and he has a strong javelin throw so he'll probably squeeze the margin a bit after event #9. Right now, Filip has 6645 points after 8 events, 125 ahead of Williams. Modin is in 3rd and I don't believe he'll catch Filip now unless something catastrophic happens to Scott in either of the final two events. A German is 4th and Solomon Simmons of the USA is in 5th and I think he might move ahead of Modin into 3rd after the javelin.

Also worth noting that Filip needs 1355 points in his final two events to get to 8000. That's going to be tough (he had 1219 in the final two events at Eugene), but maybe if he uncorks a really good javelin, he still has an outside chance at that milestone? I'm sure he's just trying to finish strong and win the gold for Team USA. Filip's PR in the decathlon is 7726 at the Pan Am Combined Cup back in June, and he's definitely on pace to shatter that best.

RE: Scott Filip in Thorpe Cup
Really jumped the gun. Williams is having a super pole vault and is still going, having cleared 5.25 meters (over 17 feet). He's within 63 points of Filip now. His best in the javelin is 56 meters and he also has a strong 1500 best (sub 4:30).

Williams may be tired after a very long pole vault competition but it's definitely going to be very tight between Filip and Williams for the top 2 spots. Filip almost certainly will need a PR in the javelin to maintain his lead. Williams has gone over 8000 points in the decathlon although that may have been a competition that featured lighter weights in the throwing events??

RE: Scott Filip in Thorpe Cup
1 Event to go. The good news is Filip is still in the lead. The bad news is he just had a so-so javelin (48.33 meters) and some others had strong throws so it's really tightened up. At least the Stanford athlete didn't have a good event at all, so he didn't pick up any points on Scott.

Heading into the final event
(1) Filip 7209
(2) Modin 7184
(3) Simmons 7155
(4) Williams 7135

It's going to be tight for places 1-4. Filip can win but he absolutely needs to equal his 4:43 from the Trials.

This has nothing to do with Filip's win, but it's an interesting story about how Thorpe's living sons are fighting to return his dad's grave to Oklahoma, instead of resting in a town that he never stepped foot in (Jim Thorpe, PA).
