The AAC is going to be fine even if it loses schools.

If it loses zero or two schools it does not add any schools.
If it loses one or three schools it simply adds one.

It would be an interesting evaluation if one school needs to be added.
Consider selecting the school that fits best and aids the conference.

Then, there is a good probability that no schools leave. The Big 12 is
not predictable. They are even talking of adding Pac schools. That
doesn't appear to be realistic.

ISU is saying no expansion without extending the GOR. Refusal by some
schools to sign, could lead to the Big 12 not expanding at all.

Whatever happens the AAC will be strong with schools of huge potential.

It is not whether the AAC will get more money from media companies,
but by how much more.

With Big 12 expansion, the coup de gras will have been delivered (at least for football) to all G5 conferences, including the AAC. Those remaining in the AAC will have come the closest to making the big time, no doubt about it. You will, however, still have fallen short. You'll now face the same fate as the rest of us in G5 conferences.

It will change everything for the 2-4 universities that make the final cut. They'll all have fantastic futures as members of college sport's elite class. Congrats to those of you that pull it off, and condolences to those of you that came so very close.

And for those of you that never had a chance, welcome back to the real world.

while I agree with your general premise here, I still think that eventually you will see a Div 1 split off and for that to happen, the new 'super division' will have probably around 80 teams in it, which will include most of if not all of the teams in the AAC. So its not over.

I think that's a pipe dream. The P5 conferences can do everything they want to do with 64 members. The only thing left to do in realignment will be to see if the P5 reorganizes into four 16 member conferences, which I think is very doubtful, and to see if the G5 conferences reorganize into more geographic based conferences, which I think is very likely.

The AAC has shown the way. Im not convinced UT will get a better deal than it has with its Big12 payout plus the LHN payout. UT is the highest paid FBS team under the current model. Its entirely possible that UT will eventually conclude being the highest paid FBS school in a central time zone conference playing against nearby regional rivals is, in fact, its best option. If the Big12 extends its GOR like the ACC did, then there is no 4X16 break away in the foreseeable future. In fact, the model for any break away becomes the 5X16 model (which coincidentally, is 80 teams).

That said, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see some sort of large nationwide G5 "best of the rest" conference being part of a breakaway. That would push the number up to near 100 to 104. That would keep the academies and a number of deserving financially committed G5 schools involved in the top level of football and provide depth for the "super division" basketball tournament.

Also, if the B 12 extends the GOR, I doubt that any other adds will be made in the next 10 or more years. What the B 12 expansion has shown is that there are no high value G5's other than BYU. Every other school has some kind of warts. If they take 4, there are no desirable schools left. ACC already extended GOR, SEC does not need to, and PAC 12, not so sure about, but who would they be interested in or who would leave them? BIG doesn't really need to add. I think this is the last lifeboat for a long time.

I've read some articles in the past about 4 mega conferences etc. Do you have anything new or is this your opinion?

just my opinion

I see it going to four mega conferences and being a 'super D1' type deal

again, just an opinion

The P5's #1 goal is to maintain control of D1/FBS.

If the P5 left to form their own division they would be leaving behind a lot of college sport fans that tune in that are part of their system. Schools that have enough name value to form a compelling basketball tournament at the very least.

That's why they are sucking up additional G5 schools to ensure they have as much value as is possible in a 14 team conference. The long term affect to putting these conferences on steroids is more P5 programs will have to finish with a losing record than before which hurts recruiting relative to the G5. Schedules become more random and feature schools that are not rivals.
