2016-17 WBB Non-Conf Schedules

Matt Daniel and his staff just pulled in 4 star recruit Kristen Mayo.
Kristen Mayo

It amazes me the players Matt Daniel has pulled in at Marshall since he has been here. Off the top of my head since his 1st full year here he has pulled in 5 4 star recruit and a 5 star transfer. In 11 years at Marshall Royce Chadwick never had a 4 star player play for him as a recruit he recruited and only 2 to transfer in.

The thing is most people at Marshall don't think that Daniel is going anywhere. He has said so far that Marshall is the only school he would have left for when he was HC at Central Arkansas. We probably have Billy "The Kid" Donovan to thank for Daniel. He talked about in his introductory press conference that he was Donovan's 1st player that he offered a scholarship to. I think that kinda stuck with Daniel. He passed at went to Colorado State and Billy filled the scholarship with Jason Williams, who later followed Donovan to Florida. Also Daniel's wife is a dentist and she has started her own practice in H'Ton.

Sheesh. Go 7-4, 8-3 against that and we'll have an at-large locked up by New Year's.

Seriously. The only teams on that list who are "not good" are Tech and Peay and they're local historical rivals that will be a big draw. I'm already planning to make the drive to TTU. What a great schedule for us - the best part is we get 7 of 11 at home, and two of those are top ten teams in Louisville and Arizona State. It would be a stretch for the likeliness of this but if we go undefeated or 10-1 against that schedule we could be top 15 or 10 by the time conference play begins. Very impressed with the work Insell put into this.

RE: 2016-17 WBB Non-Conf Schedules
Let us NOT forget how teams with relatively high RPI's can get "jilted" EVERY year(unless you are from a P5).

IMO this goes back to the bottom pulling the rest down.C-USA had five teams over the 200 RPI level last year and six the year before. A reduction to three would be progress. Our "basement" is too big.

Best to ALL C-USA teams in OC games this year!!

Those "jilted" teams of which you speak generally have nothing more than a high RPI. You have to beat multiple (3+) other tournament worthy teams, preferably on the road, and avoid the losses to the basement teams. UTEP and WKy failed on both accounts last year.

I agree that the basement teams need to improve. Rice, FAU, UNT, UTSA and FIU have been horrible the past three years. That's just too many teams that are bad. But the top of the league needs to improve as well. In the past three years, UTEP has played a total of four P5 schools. Western only scheduled two P5 opponents last year when a couple more quality OOC wins could have gotten you into the tournament.

I like the future. MT and WKy will always be there. Marshall is making huge strides as a program climbing from RPI 262 to 189 to 128 and is going from one P5 foe last season to three this year. ODU has been consistently in that 125 range and just needs one or two games a year to climb into the top-100. Charlotte made the jump into the top-100 last year and hopefully can remain. UTEP bounced back from the nightmare season two years ago and just needs to schedule better in OOC.

You have to realize how low our program was and that no one in or around Marshall never really expect them to do anything. I always liked Royce Chadwick but his recruiting tactics was always all over the map. He recruited Texas (where he's from) to New York. And rarely recruited home grown talent.

Just the opposite of Matt Daniel has done. Daniel since he has been here. The roster hasn't been updated yet but right now Daniel has 6 WV kids on the roster (2 4 Star, 2 high 3star) and 2 Kentucky kids. I don't think any of them would have been offered even a walkon under Chadwick.

We get the distinct honor of playing the Florida schools TWICE this year no less. Double the RPI killing fun.

Unfortunately you're right. 04-chairshot Hoping at least FAU isn't as crappy as usual this year. I'd be shocked to see FIU above 200 though I am crossing my fingers they're not too far below...

RE: 2016-17 WBB Non-Conf Schedules
Looks like UTEP has decided to finally schedule some P-5 schools in OOC play.

Nov. 11 Northern Arizona
Nov. 13 Texas Southern
Nov. 17 Western New Mexico
Nov. 24 vs. LSU$ U.S. Virgin Islands
Nov. 25 vs. NC State$ U.S. Virgin Islands
Nov. 26 vs. Kansas State$ U.S. Virgin Islands
Nov. 30 Houston Baptist
Dec. 11 at New Mexico
Dec. 15 NM State
Dec. 19 TBD! Niceville, Fla. TBA (Alabama, Pitt, McNeese St)
Dec. 20 TBD! Niceville, Fla. TBA (Alabama, Pitt, McNeese St)
Dec. 28 Cal State Bakersfield

Maybe next year UTEP will also figure out that road wins count more for RPI and in the eyes of the selection committee.

Now that is a nice OOC schedule for Charlotte. Looks like teams are getting the memo. This could/should be a multi-bid year if we have some good teams.

More of it needed, but fortunately it looks like it is trending that way thru all the schools this year.
