CFP - top five?
With Big 12 looking to be stable for a while, it's gonna stay a P5 for a while.

So here's an easy way to take the top five instead of just the top four for the CFP:

- #1 team gets a bye for the semi-finals
- #2 vs #5 and #3 vs #4 in the semis
- highest rated winner advances to final vs #1, unless somehow if #5 wins there is some mechanism that would allow it to get into the final if winner of #3/#4 play terrible

That keeps the excitement of the playoff while being inclusive of (potentially) all five P5 champs, and emphasizes the regular season to boot (earning a higher ranking matters).

RE: CFP - top five?
It could work like this:

2 wins -> 2 is in
2 loses + 3 wins -> 3 is in
2 loses + 3 loses -> some secondary criteria gives 5 a chance over 4

stever,

That's why the regular season matters! It's actually quite brilliant.

OTOH, what if all five P5 champs go undefeated and ranked top five? Only take the top four?? That's not dumb as stars???

So the 3 seed could be screwed? You have said some stupid **** on the board, but this absolutely takes the cake as the dumbest thing you have EVER said.... There is no chance in hell this goes. You see, they want playoffs, where it's totally decided once it starts on the field- not by anything else.

Of course 3 isn't screwed. They just don't 100% control their destiny. That happens all the time in football, a team plays for the win knowing it has to have good luck on the outcome of another game.

Happens every year. Adds drama and interest.

"They" care about one thing only: ratings. You know that.

Sorry but there would be absolutely no chance in hell that would happen. To go from a situation where you are guaranteed to control your own destiny to not. The most moronic thing you have ever said. If you are in a game labeled as a semifinal game, and you win, you absolutely WILL be in the title game. Not screwed because the polls said so.

Of course, you just wish we could go to where the Bowls were all traditional matchups and then take top 2 ranked teams and play in a title game. Sorry, the game is moving forward not looking backwards.

RE: CFP - top five?
Yeah this is a really REALLY dumb idea. No one wants to watch a playoff game where neither team will move on. Thats not a playoff, that just an exhibition. No way that happens. If you said 6 teams with the top 2 getting byes to the semis then sure but not a chance a team who wins doesn't move on. DOA idea.

The 3/4 game would always be played first. That way you wouldn't know if the 2 had won yet. Adds intrigue and drama, and gives a higher emphasis on regular season while being inclusive of all P5.

But OK, it must be more fair to exclude one of five equal champs. When the "polls screw a team" there, it's just life.

RGuy, can't expand the playoff rounds though.

It's a lot more fair than a team winning a semifinal game and not making the title game. That is just moronic. Dumbest thing you have ever said.

Well, clearly the gist of the idea is brilliant. Might need some refining.

But if we have a P5, no reason not to include all five in the post season and reward #1 with a bye.

How can it possibly be more fair to keep one team at home??? My way at least gives 2-5 a chance!

You have no idea what fairness means, clearly.

If you want to go to 5, then:

Round 1
#4 vs #5

Semi-finals
Winner plays #1
#2 vs #3

Finals

So the 5 has no chance to advance to the final? Only to play spoiler against #2?

I must be missing something, or do they re-rank after the semi-finals?

Team 5 would have NO WAY OF MOVING ON NO MATTER WHAT BECAUSE SOMEONE IS ALWAYS RANKED HIGHER!!! THEY ARE LEFT OUT EVEN IF THEY WIN!!!

Rut/goof,

Incorrect, as I already explained on page 1. If 4 beats 3, there would be some way for 5 to possibly advance over 4. I don't have to give the exact explaination, it's not like you guys are vetting the idea here. It's the gist that matters.

dback, can't expand the rounds.

RE: CFP - top five?
Why not just take the top 4 conference champs, and two at-large schools for a 6 team playoff (#1 and #2 get byes)?

...and get rid of the polls

OR in other words, a play-in game. I would add a rule that the 2 worst rated teams that did not win a CCG has to play in the play-in games.

For example an undefeated Notre Dame team still has to play in the play-in game. An undefeated Iowa team that loses its CCG and goes 12-1, would have to play in a play-in game.

The play-in games can be played the week after the CCG and loser goes back into the bowl pool.
