Yep, pretty clear from taking a glance at that article that he has gotten word from school presidents that they will accept the B12 offer.

RE: Aresco talks about realignment
If Big 12 raids AAC, commissioner Mike Aresco says his league will be OK
By Tony Barnhart
Posted on July 29, 2016

EXCERPTS:

“In these situations, communication is critical,” said Aresco, who was a long-time television executive before getting into college administration. “I’ve been talking to the (athletic directors) and the president of the schools that might leave, and it looks like some of them will. We’re talking to each other and trying to figure out the future. We expect everyone who leaves will leave on good terms.”

****

Aresco also has heard that the Big 12 is looking at bringing in some schools as football-only members.

“Right now, we’re shadow boxing a little because we don’t know what is going to happen,” he said. “But have already started our contingency planning for just about every scenario. Whatever happens, we’ll have a plan. We’ll be fine.”

****

He did say that if only two schools left, staying at 10 would be an option for the AAC because conferences with 10 members now can play a championship football game.

“We’ve been working with the shadow of this (expansion) over our heads for the past two years. We haven’t been sitting back and waiting for things to happen,” Aresco said. “No matter what happens, we will have a conference.”

RE: Aresco talks about realignment
its a bit of a shame for AAC fans because the AAC is clearly a great football (and all-around sports) conference... Houston, Memphis and Cincinnati basically have been carrying the weight for the past couple of years in football (along with Navy), so to lose them will be very difficult to cover since any replacements, whether from CUSA, MAC, or MWC will likely be a significantly worse program. NIU + Boise + Air Force might work perhaps, but that's about it, and you'll be further stretching the travel distances/costs for all schools.

I was listening to that segment this morning and it seemed like he admitted that multiple teams are gone.

Gotta love Big East fans gleeful at the AAC getting raided. Like it helps the Big East out at all. A stronger P5 doesn't help the Big East out at all whatsoever.

Sorry S20, I have to disagree. P5 is for football. Big East true competition was the AAC. Even though it's basketball under achieved the past couple of years, it was a sleeping giant. If the MAC was willing to take back Temple and include UCONN as Football only, then the I could see the Big East jump at these two teams. There would be a P6 for Basketball. Possibly even Fox look at extending the Basketball deal.

But how does it hurt them? Honest question. They don't play football. They are a power conference in basketball. They more than likely would be invited along if any split ever occurred. The P5 has no bearing on a basketball conference like the Big East. They aren't looking for a slice of the FB pie and they bring value to any future BBall tournament. This could help them though if UConn is left behind and they decide that playing in a lower level G5 league isn't worth sacrificing their top notch BBall program. Not saying it's going to happen but the more schools the AAC loses and who exactly they bring in will definitely have an impact on UConns future in the AAC. If the AAC goes with southern schools far away from Storrs that could lead to a booster revolt.

The more teams they include, the easier it is to eventually leave the NCAA.

Yeah, that quote above says he expects "some teams will leave the AAC."

Cinci and Houston.

Add one from CUSA (SoMiss?) and try to get Army football only.

Cincy and Houston. And Memphis. And BYU.

Good luck to Memphis. Seriously. Good luck to any AAC school trying to catch the last train out of G5ville.

Short of Notre Dame joining the ACC, it's hard for me to see where there's going to be an expansion opportunity that will be inclusive of G5 teams happening again after this.

Keep hearing Houston won't be able to get the votes. Cincy & BYU if 2. UConn & Memphis/Houston if 4 . Still don't see them expanding without an extended GOR

I can only see ACC adding a ND/UCONN to go to 16 after this.

RE: Aresco talks about realignment
You might see UConn will lobby for UMass to join the AAC for all sports. They would virtually be on an island by themselves. Football is improving, and basketball could help. Old Dominion could bring their athletic spending into the AAC, and they are already spending at the AAC levels. Southern Miss. is also favored to join as well.

I just do not see Houston getting picked by the Big 12. I would not be surprise if New Mexico and Houston are being vetted by the PAC 12.

I could see East Carolina as a the fourth team from the AAC going to the Big 12. Losing 4 teams in the AAC would bring them down to 8/7. 8 for football and 7 for the rest of the other sports.

Apparently Aresco isn't lurking on this board or he would have heard that there is no minimum number of teams required to have a CCG (except the minimum needed to have a conference at all). 07-coffee3

I think he just meant that 12 was no longer required and not that 10 was required.
