The Big 12 would prefer to wrap up the expansion process before the start of the 2016 football season, three persons with knowledge of the ongoing process told CBS Sports on Thursday.

While it's not clear whether a final decision on timing has been made, all three sources said the Big 12 doesn't want expansion to overshadow the league's football season with a drawn-out process that would extend into the 2016 campaign.

The Big 12's season kicks off Sept. 2 when Baylor hosts Northwestern State and Kansas State travels to Stanford.

The first game of the season is Friday, August 26th.

No later than 4 weeks then on a decision.

Not me, lol. Memphis officials. I just tend to refer to Memohis as "us." I heard the Big 12 told Memphis the announcements would likely be in 2-3 weeks or so. Pretty much jives with August, right?

What sounds so sketchy about this is, the big 12 admitted that expansion only came up because of the ACC GOR during media days. So are telling me the big 12 took about 4 days to decide who they were going to expand with? I feel like something like this takes time and not only that but the ADs and presidents haven't even had a meeting. How can they vote about all this, decide how much money new members get, hear pitches from every school, and contact all the schools in less than one week?

Of course, because that is the Memphis narrative, they were voted in months ago and only now are the reporters and everyone else catching up with this story. Some serious tin foil hat stuff right here.

Everything about the way the Big 12 does business is strange and amateurish – from soup to nuts.

Houston could be just a smoke screen. I don't think there is enough votes to take them even if politics got involved.

They could expand to 6. They could add BYU and Boise State where they could keep their tv contract as is, and take a smaller piece of the Big 12 tv money. Than, they could take 4 AAC schools on the east.

Cincinnati, Memphis, East Carolina and UCF might be the right way to go. You would get 6 of the 7 who had a steady fanbase that does not yoyo.
