The P5 are abandoning that Sunday because their conference championships start on Tuesday or Wednesday. Playing the championship on that Sunday will allow more fans to stay for the game.

UNCW is doing what they need to to stay on the A10's short list; win and draw crowds.

I agree 100% and its all about getting in front of as many people as possible. The ACC is out of NC for a while ,so maybe they can get noticed without being called UNC at Wilmington.
If they make the NCAA again this year you have to know that Keatts is gone with the UL stuff all behind him now. He might be a top target for bigger programs. Need a plan for the future now.

The Mullet touches upon one of old 70s's sore spots.

How is it that UNLV, IUPUI, UMKC, UTEP, UCLA, et al, get listed by their preferred brands, yet we don't?

For that matter, why does ESPN, for instance, call the University of Texas at El Paso "UTEP" instead of "UT - El Paso" , while at the same they call The University of Texas at Arlington "UT - Arlington"? Why does UNC Charlotte get referred to as "Charlotte" instead of UNC Charlotte, while UNCW is referred to as UNC Wilmington?

I'll tell you why. Because those schools insist on being called that. And if someone in the media calls them something else, they pick up he phone and politely call them out on it.

It would be a simple matter to get a free intern, give him some college credit for working in the Sports Information Office and get him or her to do the same thing to every website/media outlet that uses a name for our school other than the one which we prefer to be called.

For some reason UNCW has never understood the importance of branding. Shoulders get shrugged when people point this stuff out to them...then they cant understand why we keep getting called "UNC at Wilmington" or "NC-Wilmington" or "UNC- Wilm." or some other bush league name.

CAA TV Deal expires after this season
I stand with you guys 110% on this. It's some bush league garbage and now that we are shining bright is the BEST time to use what small amount of leverage we have to push for this.

Talk about an understatement!

Let me give you an example of what a University that understands branding does when they are serious about it:

UMKC Branding Standards Manual

Not that I think UMKC is the be-all and end-all ...but compare what they do re: branding to what we do and the differences are stark. An excerpt:

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE UMKC BRAND
UMKC competes with academic institutions locally, nationally
and even internationally. It is increasingly important for us to
express a single, engaging voice in all that we do.
The logo, visuals and language we use in various mediums
to describe the university enable us to establish and maintain
a clear, unified brand identity within the campus, the
community and beyond.
These brand guidelines are here to assist academic units,
departments, programs, affiliates, constituents, vendors
and partners in producing materials that are consistent and
immediately recognizable as UMKC. We expect all university
partners to use the brand consistently

RE: CAA TV Deal expires after this season
While I'm on this rant, take a look - for instance - at the Yahoo page for UNCW Basketball:

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/teams/nag/

Presently we are listed BOTH as UNCW and as "N.C. Wilmington"...plus they still have the old logo up for the team.

Is ESPN any better? Well, not really:

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketb...n-seahawks

They at least have the current logo. But looking over what they listed - and at tweets by ESPN writers - I see us listed as "UNC Wilmington", "UNCW", and "UNC-Wilmington".

How hard is it to get a free intern to contact Yahoo and ESPN (and everyone else) and send them the correct information - and then keep doing it until they at least call us by a single name and use the correct logo?

Like in all things you get what you pay for and UNCW has always done things on the cheap. I would opt for U of Wilmington and change the entire deal- ASAP. I know the drawback is Wilmington,Delaware but it would be a lot easier fix than the current mess.

"First reference to the university in a publication with internal and/or external audiences: University of North Carolina Wilmington

Second reference to the university: UNC Wilmington, UNCW or the university
Note: The name of the university does not contain hyphens or the word “at” and periods are not used with the initials UNCW.
Unless it begins a sentence, university should not be capitalized."

This was taken from the Brand Identity Guide on the UNCW website under the name compliance section

The sad thing is that they don't even try to enforce the jumbled mess!

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte chose to be branded as "Charlotte". The University of California at Los Angeles chose to be branded as "UCLA".

Pick one brand and stick with it, and then insist everyone call you by your preferred name. Don't give them multiple choices and then scratch your head when you end up being called all kinds of different names.

You folks at UNC-Wilmington seem awfully distraught about naming/branding. I am sure you will keep wearing UNCW uniforms and be discussed as UNC-W or another name. Lucky for you guys, what they call you has no bearing on the outcome and all tvs will just show UNCW on the scoreboard and your uniforms.

We just accept it and move on. Also it will get worse with us now since Bruiser (local Philly guy) is gone and he was the only reason Drexel got any discussions.

BTW I am just ribbing with you guys, though there is a popular betting site that does not even get William & Mary or Towson right either (They use Western Michigan's logo for W&M and still call Towson, Towson State).

I do agree with the thread that it starts at the school level and has to be pushed from there and not allow it to be acceptable. Then things will change.
