Sorry, but no. ECU already delivers the state of NC for the AAC. Charlotte has a fledgling football program, and football drives the bus. They have TRADITIONALLY a decent basketball program, but those days seem like ancient history at this point.

UNC-Charlotte doesn't even deliver their own city. (But in fairness, UNCC is located in North Charlotte, far removed from the heart of the Queen City.)

When Harrisburg shut down Captain's Galley, I was done with North Charlotte.

What I am certain of is that the area is a recruiting hotbed. Mallard Creek HS is a stone's throw from campus and produces multiple P5 football players every year (IIRC two four stars and a five star last class). The other schools nearby are no slouches either (Butler, Vance, West Charlotte, Independence, etc). The right coach could put together a heck of a program by walling off the city.

And like they are today, all those kids will still go SEC first then ACC. The good players will not stay local.

Well one of them stayed anyway: 4 star RB Robert Washington from Mountain Island Charter had 40+ offers including multiple P5's (Michigan, Syracuse, TCU, Alabama and North Carolina to name a few). He will be playing for Charlotte this season.

If a fledgling program can land one of those kids, imagine what a sustained period of bowl teams would allow them to capture? The ground is ripe for the picking. It's not like any particular program owns the market. Tends to be picked at by several, but its deep enough to support a strong local program even with several defections.

Lose at least 2 and we become thin at Olympic sports and worse in baseball. Don't think staying at 10 is an option unless we bring in non football teams.

10 years ago you would be right, the schools presences continues to grow in Downtown (they built a $50M center city campus) and will only increase with the completion of the light rail to campus.

Charlotte's biggest issue with moving the needle is actually producing on the field/court in one of the revenue sports.

Ayrsley is finally starting to live up to its potential. Turning into a nice little entertainment hub. Long time coming, but there is a lot going on there right now.

The light rail is going to have a profound effect on that campus when it opens (2017?).

One of the knocks on the University was that it was "way out" in the North Charlotte 'burbs. That was 10-15 years ago. Things have happened since. First, the city has grown out. The school is now inside the 485 loop. Then they built that $50Million uptown building (the Rubic's cube). And now, that building, uptown, campus, and heavily populated / higher income South Charlotte will all be connected via light rail with a stop across the street from the football stadium (with a pedestrian bridge), and a stop right in the middle of campus. I am trying to think of another southern school with a similar setup, that isn't already right in the middle of downtown. Charlotte will have the best of both worlds when the light rail comes online - a huge, natural beauty campus, and immediate, quick, cheap access to downtown jobs and nightlife.

It's amazing how much that campus has changed since the school was in CUSA. They've added about 10k students, and will be at 30k for the 2017 academic year, and 35k within 5-6 years after that, most of which will be on campus or in apartments adjacent to it. This school had maybe 13k students when it joined CUSA, and half of those were commuters. Complete culture change since then.

You are well informed Artifice. The University City area is the second largest employment area in metro-Charlotte behind uptown, and the University Research Park is one of the largest associated with a university in the nation.

Really all we need to do is get winning in hoops back to where it used to be, and let football mature beyond infancy so we can expand the stadium, and we will be in the mix for a lot of big things. This year we may find out whether Mark Price really knows anything about this game or not.

I like the idea of charlotte... just like I like the Idea of ODU... but both need to do a little winning or at least knock off some big boys to be considered. Its ironic but they are the two new kids and yet I feel like they have the most potential.

I'd rather go with large state schools like odu and charlotte vs Rice. The picks become problematic once we lose members so might as well look pass 10 years.
