Subject: Outdoor warning system to be tested July 30

Dear Rice Community,

The Rice University Police Department will conduct additional testing of its new outdoor warning system on Saturday, July 30, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This is a follow-up to the testing we conducted in June.

During the test period you may hear sirens, bell tones and spoken messages coming from five speaker towers that have been installed on campus. The speakers are strategically located so that we can broadcast critical information across campus to people who are outside when an emergency occurs. The speakers are not intended to be heard by people who are indoors.

No action or response is needed from you during this sound test. RUPD will have personnel stationed around campus to monitor how well the warning signals and messages can be heard.

During a true emergency, such as an active shooter on campus, we may use this system to communicate critical information to people outdoors.
