Long Beach State's AD said a few years ago that they are interested in reinstating football, and be part of the MWC. The LA market is another one that would be something as well.

There are rumors of some west coast D2 football schools want to move up as well, but they have no place to go. Could the Big Sky split into a north/south. Azusa Pacific is kinda much closer to Northern Arizona as well.

They have better options! FBS options!!!

Does not mean the FBS options are better than the Big Sky schools. Portland State was better than those Texas C-USA schools. Most of the Big Sky schools can only go to the MWC anyways since there is no other west coast FBS conference to take them.

In that case: NAU to the MWC!!! Fits perfectly as a link between New Mexico, UNLV and San Diego State!!!!

NAU is closer to UNLV than any current MWC team
NAU is closer to UNM than any current MWC team

NAU is in the Phoenix Media Market, the #12 in the Nation. Only current MWC team in a larger market is SJSU.

Rice has had decades upon decades to show it's potential and I think it has. Making a bowl game in a bottom conference is about as good as they will be.
Agreed. I'll never understand the Rice love

Not really that hard to see why Rice is popular with University Presidents

Only one - an NBC station. The rest are all from Phoenix. Flagstaff is considered part of the Phoenix Media Market because of that.

Most NAU students are from the Phoenix area, and NAU offers classes in Phoenix.

You do understand that it is about more than FB success, short term or long term. Many of the BSC schools are commuter schools with small endowments located in small hard to get to cities. If the MWC were desperate they would look at Montana or MSU, maybe; and that's it.

Rice is popular with the MWC President's. That's all the vetting they need. If the MWC expands Rice will get an invite or at least be contacted in the first round of talks. UTEP and Rice are #1 and #2 on the MWC expansion list.

Academics are overrated here. Academics are a luxury when you have top choice of schools, not when you are trying to squeeze as much TV money out of every new contract. The MWC has Boise, academics aren;t their biggest concern.

Only Boise State could claim that they expand past their market. Fans of college football tend to watch a team that wins a lot. Especially when Boise State beats a P5 school.

Keeping the MWC for the West, and the AAC for the East makes the most sense. And maybe reforming the SWC for TX and nearby teams.

Following this logic, for the MWC NMSU and Idaho should get top priority IMHO, with UTEP in the wings if the new SWC doesn't get founded (needs a dynamic leader, likely from TX, to get it off the ground).

Then the P5's members need to schedule many nonconference games with these conferences, without power-points penalties. It's good sportsmanship and politics.

Though 150 miles away, Flagstaff is in Nielsen's Phoenix designated market area. Much like the Salt Lake City DMA, which encompasses most of the state of Utah and parts of Nevada, Idaho, and Wyoming.

With that said, the whole "media markets" idea is so overplayed in conference realignment. When the 16-team WAC was formed, much was made about all the markets that the WAC would cover - Dallas, Houston, Denver, San Diego, etc., etc.

How did that work out?

The Big Sky technically covers some great media markets - Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, etc.

NAU would not *deliver* the Phoenix market to the MWC. Non-starter.

Great Idea. I think he is a Sassy Sassoon type of guy With my connections in the hair product industry, I should be able to get Thompson on NAU's side in no time.

If the MWC goes unscathed in the Big XII expansion they should go to 16 with UTEP, SMU, Tulsa and either Tex State or UTSA.

Thompson was just throwing out an offhand remark in response to a media question about Big 12 expansion's possible impact on the MWC. I don't think it means anything. The conference is very stable and unlikely to make a move unless it loses a member or two to the Big 12, in which case UTEP would be the first backfill candidate.

Rice has had decades upon decades to show it's potential and I think it has. Making a bowl game in a bottom conference is about as good as they will be.

You'd think a Rutgers guy would be easier on a school whose selling points are its location in a big TV market and a century-long history of athletic mediocrity.

Actually that's not fair. Rice has major bowl games on their resume.

(Obviously, Rutgers fans just bug me. I think I have a problem.)

I don't think it means anything. The conference is very stable and unlikely to make a move unless it loses a member or two to the Big 12, in which case UTEP would be the first backfill candidate.

UTEP would be a good addition regardless. Going to 12 full + Hawai'i for football is still a manageable size.
