For those of you that have not heard, we regret to inform you that David Herr passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016, surrounded by his family in his home, Staunton, VA. As one of the most beloved professors at JMU, we could not pass up the opportunity to recognize the countless lessons he has taught and will teach past, present, and future educators. We will cherish our memories with you, Dave! The College of Education sends our condolences to all family and friends.
"Dave's passion for teaching was legendary, and he achieved his goal of never retiring. He taught at James Madison University for 41 years, preparing teachers for the classroom and life. Intertwined into his career was his service. For many years, he conducted summer camps for institutionalized adolescents and children throughout Virginia. He began the Friends of Rachel club at JMU, the first at the college level. He went on enumerable alternative spring and fall breaks with his students, providing various services to needy communities. In addition, he was a youth league coach and coach of the Staunton Sabotage AAU girls basketball team, which held a special place in his heart. He was also a CASA volunteer. Being an active member of Olivet Presbyterian Church was a source of great joy for him."
There will be a memorial service 4:00 PM Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Olivet Presbyterian Church.
