Some interesting bowl information impacting G5 Bowls.
With the previously announced addition of Arizona Bowl in Tucson, the Sun Belt will have primary tie-ins with five postseason games this season: the New Orleans Bowl, Mobile’s GoDaddy Bowl, the Cure Bowl in Orlando and the Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.
While the Sun Belt gained a fifth bowl partner, however, it quietly lost secondary ties with two others.
The Sun Belt once had been part of a multi-conference rotational schedule for the Bahama and Miami Beach bowls, but it no longer is, Benson confirmed Monday.
On the flip side, the Sun Belt no longer will have to yield its longstanding tie-in with the New Orleans Bowl to conferences affiliated with those other bowls – something it would have had to do under an agreement no longer in effect.
“It’s just that some of the deals that were agreed to by handshake never materialized,” Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson said Monday. “Getting Orlando as a fourth (bowl partner) and then getting Tucson as the fifth accommodated any of our need."

I'm good with that. Trading New Orleans (usually a money MAKER) for our teams for a huge loss in Miami or Nassau is not a good trade. Tucson will be a loser for any team going, but that is our 5th place team. And we have 5 bowl slots for 10 teams.

It's hard to imagine Tucson being successful at all unless it's MWC vs. PAC 12 or maybe Big 12. It's a long haul for limited payoff and exposure for everyone else.

I don't get the "ROI" mentality for low end bowl games. It ain't about making money at that level, for the teams. FBS football doesn't make money for those teams. It's about spending a reasonable amount of money to have nice things. A bowl game, regardless where or how little fans come or tune in, is a very nice thing for a program.

Guess the Miami and Bahamas bowls need to find other conferences, but who?

Just a guess, AAC/Miami bowl was probably looking to offer BYU those years before all the Big 12 expansion. Probably try to work out something either the MWC or ACC. If it occurs during the St. Pete ACC off years, could work well for both conferences.

I enjoy watching those games. Usually the only time I see those teams play. also usually very fun wild games.

Probably the idea is to not lose too much money.

I'd prefer to have games that our fans can get to, that we can watch in person, that are more likely to have large crowds, and that don't hurt our bottom lines as well.
Sure, we'd go to Boise to play a P5 team. But no point in going to the Bahamas to play a CUSA team.

It's hard to imagine the Tucson game being anything more than a bowl of last resort as long as that game has no legitimate TV deal. You can't sign away your media rights to "campusinsiders.com" and expect to be an attractive option to bowl teams. Any team with options will choose a bowl with legit TV exposure over one without.
