We had to coach our players that they might get their feelings hurt? WTF?

And here come the walkbacks of increased up-tempo....

My goodness, Talon, if you're right on this, I didn't expect that until maybe at least after the first game.

On discussion of opening with Western Kentucky ... "win or lose, we'll come out of it a better football team."

Ugh. I'm not typically one to dissect coachspeak, but just ugh.

Zach Wright was asked about changes to the offense, and he said more accountability - if guys mess up they have to know they're going to get their feelings hurt or some such - sounded like peewee football coaching points.

On the tempo - DB was asked about it and said - well we're going to maintain a variety of tempos - four tempos - really like being able to control the ball for 40+ minutes - but you've got to score or you'll still lose, blah blah blah...

I knew we were in trouble when he broke out Darrell Royal.

EDIT: In fairness to Bailiff, his message has just gotten so stale with me that I'm not sure there's anything he could say at this point at which I wouldn't roll my eyes.

Glad it took us 9 years to get to some semblance of purported accountability.

The one thing I did agree with DB on is the whole discussion regarding Rice being other team's homecoming games. DB said that one year, we were the Homecoming Game for 7 teams (out of 12 games). Now we aren't anyone's Homecoming Game. DB said that Rice is now one of the premier teams in CUSA. I think that's right. Fans of other schools in CUSA see Rice as one of the top teams and big programs in the conference. Whether that is enough (or what we should aspire to) is a different conversation.

But the tempo conversation......just......man. Four tempos? And the lowering of expectations against WKU? Not the ideal way to kick off the season's hype train, DB.

Agreed. I'm all for realistic expectations and candor, but this is WKU we are talking about, not Alabama or Ohio State...

Who lost their senior QB who carved us up last year at HRS. Granted, they have talent, but first game of the season with a new QB should give us some optimism.

Of course, this could be DB's way of downplaying expectations for the season. He did preface his comments on WKU by saying that we want to play better opponents because, win or lose, we will be a better football team in the long run.

This reflects changes in CUSA membership as much or more than any changes in Rice's program.

Heck last year we weren't even at our own homecoming. Now that is even worse than being the visiting team at HCs.

Ha! I actually laughed out loud at that one.

But I might disagree about us not being at our own homecoming. In fact, I'd argue that we won our own homecoming. Didn't Rice beat Rice? Rimshot

That's an extremely unfair, blanket, assumption. While yes, in the early years I heard stories of guys that seemed extremely school-girlish in their response to coaching/football in general, by the time I got there it had improved greatly. In my time there we were extremely accountable more to each other because the coaches knew the seniors we had could do that, but the OL coach didn't pull any punches when you messed up. Also, I got into a fistfight with another player because he wasn't taking care of teammates in practice (and he was an a$$hat in general). I wasn't going to take another guy potentially hurting our own players in practice just so he could look cool on practice film...ended up breaking my hand. Doc said I had a great left hook though.

I think that is a reference to the younger guys from last year thinking they had arrived as freshmen, and maybe even a few sophomores, then reacting badly to coaching. They had been highly recruited, big star at their high school, etc. and didn't like the change, so took it negatively which impacted the W-L column.

Well, precise execution has always been a hallmark of Bailiff teams. So, I am sure we won't have any difficulty executing four tempos.
