Big 12 Expansion Fan Poll (NIU Included)
Poll is going on 3 days and 12,000 votes. It has been posted on dozens of different team boards and thus reflects the view of CFB fans from all over the country (as can be seen from voting location map). Thought you guys might want to vote as well:

Odd that the options aren't listed alphabetically. Seems like the favorites are listed fist. Might have affected voting.

Good grief. We're dead last! I don't really know what this poll is or if it really matters - but I don't like to see NIU in last place. So vote.

I think this poll kind of gives us an indication of why these embarrassing bowl game losses do matter towards our national perception.

We like to cite our success within the MAC as a means to validate our football program - yet I don't think the vast majority of football fans have any idea who is even in the MAC let alone hold the best of the conference in high regard.

Without looking it up, can anyone tell me who the best teams are in the Sun Belt over the past five or six years? I couldn't, I have a general idea, I suppose, but I don't really know.

Football fans have no respect for the teams in these lesser conferences.

If this poll was put out coming off the Orange Bowl season, I think we would see NIU trending much higher. The last memory everyone has of the Huskies was the San Diego beat down. The perception of being a weak sister is not easy to shake. It's going to take some work to overcome that.

Well, that and also people can see our games on ESPN2 and see that we have 13,000 people in the stands.

But yet there are people on this board that will argue that bowl games are meaningless 03-banghead

Bowl games are meaningless mostly. Bowl games are just another game. The only value they have is that it makes the total of games to 13 or 14 and not 12. Obviously an 8-6 season would be better than a 7-7 season. What does not matter is to say a bowl game represents any type of "post-season appearance". These bowl spots are not earned and thus they cannot be considered as post-season games. It is just another game, and like we saw with a potentially interesting matchup last year of NIU-Boise St, then it can have some meaning. But in no way should someone say "NIU cant win a post-season game". That is just a bogus, its just another game without any significant meaning in itself. Now what does matter, which would have mattered in any one of the 14 games NIU played last year, is if they completely laid down like they did vs Boise. If NIU went to BC and decided they had no interest in playing, that would have been just as disappointing as it was vs Boise St. The disappointment @ Boise was not because it was a bowl game, it was because NIU quit in a game.

That is unfortunately true. We had national exposure and s&%t the bed especially last year! I am big time rooting and hoping for a turn around of that starting with San Diego St. and USF this fall!

NIU's most meaningful games last year were the BC and Ohio State games. The Boise St game is only meaningful because NIU quit during the game, or really before the game even started. That is why I don't blame any prognosticators for how low they pick NIU, it is hard to be high on a team that waved a white flag before their last game.

Good point. Obviously too late to fix it now, That said, it has been posted on dozens of different CFB team boards. Most folks who care about CFB enough to spend time on a message board discussing it are usually pretty knowledgable, at least in their own minds) and more likely to choose based on their opinion rather than order. I tried to post it here, but had to wait for the moderators to verify my account.

But you are right, it is not a perfect poll. It does have security though preventing more than 1 vote being recorded per person, as fans of listed teams obviously try to pump up the numbers.

Also, on a side note, why did you guys change your helmets to the "NIU"? The huskie was so much cooler IMO.

NIU shouldn't be in the top four of that poll, and it has zero to do with losing bowl games. Or what people on the internet think.

Eh, very few teams have a one jersey/color/logo identity any more. It's just kinda how it is.

I can't wait for the "white dogs" look: all white unis, white shoes and socks, white helmet, white lettering and numbers. This will really reinforce the team spirit because you won't be able to tell the players apart because you won't be able to read their names and numbers. Oh, and the logo will change again to just "HUSKIES", but no one will be able to tell. Time to hit VCB and get your new white T-shirts with the new logo and schedule on the back, which, of course, will all be in white.
