Ohio Wbb. 1465 + 7164 = 8629

Toledo 4664 + 4050 = 8714

So Toledo can take pride in most overall BB attendance

6,010 Ohio
4,478 Toledo
3,587 Kent St
3,351 Akron
3,242 Buffalo
2,888 MAC avg
2,763 Ball St
2,499 CMU
2,436 WMU
2,261 BGSU
1,469 NIU
1,426 Miami
1,227 EMU

The MAC finished 14th, just 99 behind Horizon. There are essentially six tiers of attendance with the MAC currently just below the top spot in the bottom tier-

Hey NIU, Miami, EMU...time to step up your game! Those numbers are pathetic for DI men's college basketball. BG, WMU, CMU, Ball St, you guys could use some work, as well. 14th in the nation is just plain bad.

With so many MAC teams in the shadows of so many P-5 conference schools low numbers should be expected ... but 'LOW' should be in the 3,500 range from top to bottom, so a lot of work to be done by almost all.

RE: 2016 Basketball Attendance
Excluding the year the JAR opened in 83-84, the highest attendance Akron has averaged for a season is 3,782. Without a new arena, which doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon, or a tourney run that creates a newfound interest from fans I don't see Akron's attendance dramatically improving in the coming years.

It doesn't help that they play in one of the MACs smaller arenas so even when they do draw a match up that appeals to fans and sells out, it really doesn't provide that much of a boost to the season average.

Too many televised CBB games on every night. If weather's iffy who's going to trek from dorm to watch the home team when there's an ACC or Big Ten double header on the tube?

The nightly NBA games probably plays a bigger factor.

RE: 2016 Basketball Attendance
Here's a look at the MAC's avg attendance every 5 years since 1976-

#11. 3,684 ('76)
#14. 4,488 ('81)
#15. 4,177 ('86)
#16. 4,228 ('91)
#15. 4,099 ('96)
#12. 3,879 ('01)
#13. 3,509 ('06)
#14. 2,907 ('11)
#14. 2,888 ('16)

Based on this snap shot it looks like the MAC was able to keep an avg of ~3,500-4,000 for several years but has fallen off recently. Certainly TV and internet can be a factor but I'm still optimistic enough to believe we can get back to near 4K range.

The high water mark in this snapshot was 1981, here's the numbers for each school for that year-

8,178 Toledo
5,020 Ball St
4,930 WMU
4,615 NIU
4,488 MAC avg
4,260 CMU
3,718 Ohio
3,596 BGSU
3,506 Miami
2,970 EMU
1,939 Akron*
1,681 Kent St
417 Buffalo*

*not members of MAC at that time.

In 1981 the MAC finished 14th in attendance just like it did this season. This tells me falling attendance is a college basketball problem, not a MAC problem. MLB is facing a similar problem where more people elect to stay home to watch games instead of going to the live event.

It's hard to fault them in a time where cable bills have ballooned to $100+/mo. If you're paying those prices, you better try to get your money's worth.

lot of smaller conferences back then too though. MAC would have been around 10th if conferences ahead of them were consolidated as they are today.

MLB attendance is not declining. Not anything like CBB

Fair enough. I appear to have over generalized MLB based off the Indians who have had declining attendance for years despite putting up incredible TV ratings.

BG, WMU, CMU, Ball St, you guys could use some work, as well.

Thinking Toledo is the one that needs to step up. BGSU has half of your attendance yet the city of Toledo [282,313 (2013)] is slightly more than 8 times larger than the city of Bowling Green [31,802 (2013)]. 1.58% of Toledo population/7.1% of BG population.

Or Lucas County [436,393 (2013)] is slightly more than 3 times the size of Wood County [129,264 (2013)] and your attendance is only 4,478 (1.02% of Lucas County compared to 1.74% of Wood County)
