RE: Things Maybe Brewing out on the West Coast for UH
I don't think the Houston to the Pac-12 thing is that far-fetched, and certainly not by the standards of this message board. There's actually some logic to it and precedent as well.
Remember, Pitt had an informal offer from the Big 12 as well and wisely parlayed that into ACC membership, where it fits much better geographically, demographically, athletically, academically, etc.
Houston could do the same. However, unlike Pitt, the B12 is in Houston's natural territory so that is their best long term bet, IMO. Maybe they are attempting to leverage the P12 into a B12 bid? That's my guess.
Also, are we 100% sure that the other Big 12 programs aren't using the threat of expansion as a way of leveraging Texas into dropping the Longhorn Network? That too would make sense, IMO. Maybe they are not as interested in expansion as they are a conference-wide television network? That has to be considered too, right?
As for candidates, assuming that Texas insists on retaining its own television network, I think that means the Big 12 has to expand by four teams. They are going to need to add markets to make a conference television network viable.
I think that is also potentially bad news for Houston, despite its market size. I say that because I have to assume that a Big 12 Network, even without the University of Texas, would be carried on the first tier of most cable systems throughout the republic, right?
Honestly, that's the toughest call of the bunch and could easily go either way.
I see Cincinnati and BYU as no-brainers, assuming the B12 and BYU can work on some of the religious considerations as well as BYU-TV. That leaves one or two spots open for some combination of Memphis, Connecticut, Houston, Colorado State, UCF, USF, San Diego State, UNLV and Boise State.
Personally, I would probably go with the Florida twins - I think they each have a ridiculous amount of potential. However, if they add Houston, I could see the last spot going to a western school as a travel partner for BYU. I would strongly consider Boise State but UNLV looks like it is about to move into a $1.7 billion on campus domed palace and that too should not be casually dismissed.
