Superstars of Track at Rice tonight
The American Track League event will be at Rice tonight, with, among others, World Record holder Ashton Eaton (Decathlon), former WR holder Asafa Powell (100 meters), Olympic Gold Medalist Jeremy Wariner (400 meters), and many more of this year's Olympic hopefuls, such as Ajee Wilson (800 meters). There is a scheduled special 1000 meter race between USA 1,500 meter champion Matt Centrowitz and USA 800 meter champion Clayton Murphy of Akron University.

The meet also will be shown live on ESPN from 8-10. Rice University on National TV!

"Beautiful night here in downtown Houston"....so often that gets said on broadcasts.

The improvements in the track/soccer area look really good on the broadcast.

Haven't mentioned Rice once.. Wouldn't know it was on our campus without the Rice Soccer scoreboard in the background.

The opening included a Rice mention and shot of the campus' Main St. entrance sign.

Also in the opening ... "91 degrees, feels like 102."

Did ESPN or the ATL prohibit Rice from putting up any ID banners or signs on the track's boundary fence? Or would that have cost more than Rice was willing to pay? (Or, God forbid, did no one at Rice think about asking about putting up such signs?)

A few years ago, when Comcast Sports or some such network was broadcasting our baseball regional, the announcers led off the first broadcast with that very comment. I was able to get word to someone in the Rice SID staff, who got word to the broadcast crew, that Rice is not actually downtown and that the skyline overlooking the park is ballpark is actually the Texas Medical Center. The next day, they led off with "A beautiful view of the Texas Medical Center..."

That felt good!

As promised, it was a close one. Murphy (the 800m champ) edged out Centrowitz (the 1500m champ) by 8 hundredths of a second.

Earlier in the day, Sandi Morris set a new American record in the pole vault (4.93m).

As far as I could tell, there was no mention on RiceOwls.com either.

Seems like it should have been 1100 meters...

There was a tweet about it.

RE: Superstars of Track at Rice tonight
I went last night...and it was awesome. Great chance to meet at least 10 athletes that will be competing in Rio in less than 2 weeks. Thank you, WRC, for letting us know about the event. Natalie and I had a great time enjoying the free beer, running around the infield to watch the athletes compete, catching up with alums, and talking with the athletes. Nothing like seeing some of your favorite athletes up close, especially after seeing them compete at the Trials several weeks prior. To top it off, we met Galen Rupp last night. What a night!

1095.4m would have been even better
