I tend to think Houston's chances are looking pretty good right about now

Of course for political reasons, that's what they have to say.

But politics may end up driving this decision. If that what Texas wants, that needs to be considered.

If the Big12 is taking just 2 teams, adding Houston may be a hard sell. But if the Big12 is considering a 4-team expansion, then it might make some sense to throw Texas a bone and take Houston as 1 of 4 teams.

If you want the Top 4 schools Houston, BYU, Cincinnati, Memphis. You're really stretching it east and west w/ Provo to Morgantown.

If they really want BYU they may have to go BYU/CSU and Cin. Then decide on Houston or Memphis.

If BYU is out, Houston, Cincinnati, Memphis, UCF.

looking at conference splits it seems 14 is easier to split the conference w/ Splitting the Tx schools 2/2 or 3/2.

Interesting the tweet below that one is thanking the TX Gov for higher education investment.

The same TX Gov who I believe is sponsoring Houston's invitation.

Called in a favor, for more HE state spending??

Question is, "Are these guys saying it because they mean it, or are they saying it so they won't get blamed if/when UH isn't offered a spot?"

Frankly, I think ALL these statements and any other "breaking news" is b.s., and both the Big 12 and the future invitees already know the outcome. It's just a matter of letting the lawyers sort out the details and putting it all on paper.

Or are they saying it because they're on their way out the door and really just don't care.

the program that provided that money was put in place back in 2015 so it has nothing to do with anything about conference expansion

and Texas higher education is for the most part all formula funded and those formulas are the same for all the schools

any funding that is not specifically formula funded is still based on legislatively implemented programs and metrics that are not changed on a whim

and the PUF for UT and A&M is not just for those two individual schools it provides some funding for large parts of their system (even if not additional funding for most of them) and it takes a constitutional amendment to change that and that is not happening based on college athletics

so there are no political favors that can be bought with Texas higher ed funding by the governor

I don't buy it.

He thanked the Gov, then turns around and parrots the Gov's position.

It may not be a political favor per se, but publicly announcing support for someone else's position is a type of favor.

Also a viable option.

One has to take anything said in a political context with a grain of salt and a boulder of suspicion.

I don't think Houston is getting in, but no question, support from the UT president and the Texas governor are good for your bid.

Houston is not getting in period. They don't bring nothing but an overlapping tv market. Baylor of forced onto the Big 12 tahnks to politics, and now Houston? I don't think the Big 12 wants to go down that road again.

Actually it's probably just ass covering by UT.

They know UH isn't getting in but this way they can point to all their tweets and say "we wanted you in but gosh darn it those other schools would have none of it!"

Bam. No way any politician can blame them.

They are safe and secure knowing that the four schools UH will hurt the worst in recruiting (TTU/BU/TCU/OSU) will do their dirty work for them.

Why would TTu/BU/TCU go against the Texas governor and lawmakers? I suppose Baylor and TCU could get away with it somewhat being private institutions, but not Texas Tech.

In that case, Cincinnati controls the biggest grocery chain in Texas. UT better put us in the Big 12 or we'll shut off the food.
