A different twist on FB Only (B12)
There was a report out saying that BYU and UConn are being considered FB only. Some interpretation means the B12 is going to 12 with 2 FB Only schools.
What it really says is that BYU & UConn are ONLY being considered by the B12 as FB Only and not as all sport members, probably because of travel.
A different twist on this. Let's say the B12 decides to go to 4 with BYU, Colorado State, Memphis and Cincinnati. BYU as said would be FB Only addition. What about then about the other schools?
As far as sharing in the basketball revenue, Cincinnati and Memphis would be ready to go immediately as contributors to the B12 revenue pool. They could get all sport memberships.
Colorado State on the other hand would be viewed as more of a project athletically averaging only 25k last year in FB and no reputation in men's basketball. The B12 could offer them a FB Only with the idea of an all-sport sometime later down the road at some point.
FB Only may not just be about distance but also about getting a more mid major type athletic program financially ready to handle a move to a power conference. Keep in mind with reduced athletic share it could take Colorado State a while to be ready for the B12.
Another school that could get similar treatment is Houston because they don't have a very strong basketball program at the moment.
Cincinnati
Memphis
Houston (FB Only)
Colorado St (FB Only)
So things could shake out with Houston/Colorado State in a FB Only situation as part of the additions. With Cincinnati and Memphis that is more unlikely, IMO.

UConn for FB only. The reason they have any steam is because of BB. I don't want them if it's only for FB. Pass

A different twist on FB Only (B12)
Why not UCF for football only? I'm sure most of the conference would like the occasional road game in Florida. Their other sports could be parked in the Atlantic Sun.

IMHO
IF Big 12 is thinking Long Term
market size/potential/recruiting
growth in fan base/TV #'s/Interest
UCF (Orlando) & USF (Tampa)
are the best 2 combo pick

For UCF, going FB only could be an option, since this may be UCF's last chance at P5. Also, UCF may get the nod to add the rest of their sports at a later date. But it would be a tough pill to swallow. UCF has a state of the art 10k seat basketball arena and our new AD, Danny White is a basketball guy. His dad is the AD at Duke. So UCF would do whatever it could for full membership.

Unless Boise sneaks in. They would be football only, as well. But I think UH will bump out Boise.

Why on God's green Earth would the B12 consider UConn for football only? That's like the PAC12 inviting Kentucky for football only.

Besides, if we're picking and choosing by sport.... just invite UConn to be B12 for fball, MBB, WBB only. Save the travel for the "other" sports and play them in the sports people care about. UConn could find somewhere to play that other stuff.

UConn sponsors the following team sports:
Baseball
Basketball (M)
Basketball (W)
Field Hockey
Football
Ice Hockey (M)
Ice Hockey (W)
Lacrosse (W)
Soccer (M)
Soccer (W)
Softball
Of these, the Big 12 sponsors only Baseball, Basketball (M), Basketball (W), Football, Soccer (W), Softball and Volleyball. UConn already has another conference home for all of its other team sports except Men's Soccer. I'm sure this team will have no problem finding a home (probably in the Big East, where UConn already plays Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse) since the team has multiple national championships. Non-Team sports don't matter because the only conference sponsored events are the championships. So, your travel concerns apply only to Baseball, Soccer (W), Softball and Volleyball (W).
Keep in mind that the travel burden would fall primarily on UConn, as they would have to travel to the Big 12 core geographic area to play half their games. The teams of schools would have to make one trip per year.
UConn today plays in a conference with schools in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee and Florida. Further, as a northern school, UConn probably already spends quite a bit on travel for its baseball and softball teams to travel south multiple times during the spring to play non conference games. Playing in the Big 12 therefore would not significantly increase UConn's travel burden.

You to play all your sports in the same conference can not pick and choose. Only allow to play in a different conference if your main conference doesn't offer that sport. I.e. BYU football only to Big 12 since WCC doesn't have FBS football or ECU football only to blank conference then move all other sports to A-10 couldn't keep them in The American since The AAC offers FBS football. You however can be independent in any sport be in a conference in the rest see Notre Dame now with ACC or Miami back in the day with Independent baseball and basketball

BYU for football-only.
Houston for location-only.
Cincinnati for athletics-only.
UConn for basketball-only.
ECU for fans-only.
UCF + USF for weather-only.
Tulane for academics-only.
Boom. All problems solved. All of the benefits, none of the baggage.
