I've been in the market for a handgun and came upon some money after selling my old house in Birmingham, so I bought a pistol today. My brother in law is an avid shooter with quite the collection, and he highly recommende the Glock 19. I went to the store, showed them my ID, filled out the form, paid for it, and walked out with the gun in hand.
The form was quite detailed, including asking where I was born, if I've ever committed any felonies, if I have any history of mental health issues, substance abuse issues, or domestic violence history. Basically, everything that the left complains about is already in the background check.

you had to show your ID to exercise your 2nd amendment right?
perish the thought! Good thing we have groups fighting for your right to exercise your right vote w/o having to show your ID
Congrats to you and welcome to the proud people that enjoy the right to self protection.
You made a very good choice with the 19, Ove had mine for 22 years. Is it a Gen 3 or Gen 4?
Now go and purchase some extra magazines at least 5 total and some Hornady Critical Dedense for self protection and ball ammo for practice and reserve.
Now realize that you use a hand gun/ side arm only to allow you to get to your rifle. Go purchase a AR-15 or AR-10.

Gen 4. It comes with 3 mags. Got a box of target ammo. I'm gonna see if I can go shoot at my sister in law's land this weekend possibly. My brother in law has been pushing me to get an AR already.

What do you mean by this? I only have a shotgun.
Your pistol is primarily a backup weapon. That's why in my quote I said its function is to allow you to get or obtain your rifle. A rifle is the primary fighting weapon for self defense because it's more accurate and has more power typically.

Yeah, he's oversimplifying a bit. He had to wait for all of that "info" to be entered into a computer and run through the state bureau of investigation's database, which is tied to the FBI's database. If any of the info was incorrect... no gun for you, sir.

Fit seems to think they just take that form and file it, never to be seen again. He will never respond to your post, because it makes him look like an idiot. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if every gun hating lib on this board believes the same thing.

One option you can look at if you are hesitant to buy a rifle just for a rifle's sake is to buy a 9mm carbine that accepts the Glock mags. There are a number of them out there at a different range of prices. It's not as capable at longer ranges as a rifle since it's shooting a pistol cartridge but it does extend the range and power over a pistol. The added bonuses are you can use the same magazines and same ammo for either gun.

A shotgun is a perfectly functional home defense weapon.
The biggest problem most people have with a shotgun is they over do it on the ammo. Remember that over penetration is a possibility with slugs and larger buckshot rounds. My personal home defense loadout for my pump is 2 of the high brass #4 field loads I use for turkey followed up by 3 #1 buckshot loads. At home defense distances the #4 load is effectively going to be a solid mass of lead and while it will lethally penetrate an intruder I don't have to worry about it going through walls. This is a major concern especially in newer construction exterior walls because with the newer lightweight construction techniques there simply isn't as much mass there to stop a round.
Interestingly enough what turned me on to using #4 shot as my front line home defense round is the pictures a friend of mine showed me of a hog he killed while turkey hunting. Most people don't realize that hogs are predators as well and are opportunistic hunters. He was set up calling a gobbler in one morning when he heard a twig snap to his side. He looked over and there was a 200lb boar hog about 10 feet away sneaking up on his decoys set up in the clearing in front of him. He took aim just behind the "shield" and let a round fly. The hog dropped in it's tracks, and the pictures he took looked like it had been hit in the side with a cannonball. Massive damage to both muscular and bone structure and most importantly the lung on that side was essentially liquefied and the heart was shredded.
