Actually, with CFB trending against a conference like the MAC, the amount of larger schools in the AAC could help NIU take the next step towards a major conference. Also, I think you're overreacting to the poor season we had in 2015. STF isn't CLAWING to get out

Personally, I would like to stay in the MAC. There's nothing better than playing EMU the morning before or after Thanksgiving.

Is this confirmed? Let's say two AAC teams do leave for the B12, and we don't get the invite to the B12, Is it likely We do get an invite to the AAC?

Big 12 may look long term and realize they need to add 4 (instead of 2) so they get the pick of the litter before further expansion to 16 for the P5s. Assuming nothing crazy happens with swapping of P5s due to politics (i.e. like Arkansas & LSU leaving the SEC) and they take 4 it will be Cinci & Houston for sure and then lets say UCF & USF. I could see Memphis instead of USF or Houston as well. CSU and BYU will eventually be part of the PAC 12.

Lets say we get the AAC invite. Would you still want to be part of this conference long term? The AAC will never move beyond competing for the top G5 spot with the MWC.

West
NIU, Navy, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, Memphis (or WKU once Memphis bails)

East
ECU, Temple, Marshall, Toledo, Army, UMass

Note: I didn't include UConn because the likeliest scenario is 16 team expansion and in that case they are a lock with ND to the ACC.

I want to take the next step as much as anyone, but the AAC feels long term like it will be watered down similar to what happened to C-USA aka SBC 2.0.

To answer your question, it's as close to confirmed as you can get. The conference has requested approval to review expansion. That means there's enough teams that want it to happen and the process is beginning. I'm sure teams like Texas don't want it, while the majority bottom feeders i.e. KSU, Kansas, ISU (& WV because they're isolated and need other east teams) are wanting to add long-term stability at the cost of short term revenue loss to avoid losing a seat at the big boy table when final expansion shakes out.

First they will solicit P5 targets to see if they can get any to jump. If not they would then look to the G5 (AAC) to complete a 2 or 4 team set. I'll put the odds on 2 teams if no P5s swap (most likely scenario) and 4 teams if any P5s are involved. Either way there's a strong possibility at least 2 spots will open up in the AAC. It's no secret Cinci has always been on the short list, meaning if any further expansion is to happen they're first team up.
