Uh-oh; the pipeline seems to be draining still, for baseball
From Baseball America, today: "Overall, 127 high school players in the BA 500 did not sign pro contracts, nine more than each of the past two years. Of those players, 41 are committed to schools in the Southeastern Conference, accounting for 32.5 percent of the unsigned BA 500 recruits. Pac-12 Conference schools will take in 25 unsigned BA 500 recruits, and the Atlantic Coast Conference will get 20."

Rice has zero. Bryant has 1; Pittsburgh; Washington State; and Jacksonville, do as well. If you are not worried, you are not paying attention. The crown jewel is going to take another hit here.

Not a surprise. Pope is a much needed presence on this coaching staff.

Hasn't the MO of Coach Graham, and most legendary coaches for that matter, been to take unseen talent and develop it into a world class team of players? If so, I'd imagine over the past 20+ seasons we've had multiple years with 0 to 1 players on a list like this...and that's been the beauty of Rice Baseball.

Maybe times have changed but this doesn't seem to be a good example of how it has. Just sayin.

+1000. I don't believe we have any Top 400 prospects in our incoming Freshman class, though we do have a highly regarded JUCO xfer (1B/OF).

Where was Proctor rated coming out of HS?

All of the ones I remember in the last 8 years have gone pro instead of coming to Rice. That trend has changed though and we still aren't getting any, while the SEC and ACC keep bringing in top talent.

Fair. I don't think anyone will argue with that. I'm just pointing out I don't think that is all that much different than the 10+ years before that.

Again, maybe things are different for Rice baseball now than it was in the mid-2000s. In fact, it certainly is. Not recruiting multiple players that Baseball America (or some like source of information) says are the best 17 year olds in the world, while the SEC does recruit them...isn't really one of the things that's changed though.

That was this year's incoming class. DiCaprio was borderline Top 100 and Ford was Top 150. Amongst the previous year's Freshman crop, Gray, Chandler and Brewer were all Top 200 at one time or another. I don't think Otto was Top 400, but The OG has turned him into a Top 3 round draft pick.
