Power 5 and 9 game conference schedules
Anyone worry about this?

The Pac12, B12, and B1G are all playing 9 game schedules. I will point out that the Pac has always played 9 games, and the Big 12 pretty much has to do it because of only having 10 teams. The Big 10 moved from 8 to 9 but they also banned FCS games which frees up a spot for a G5. Not sure if it's being enforced, because I see a couple B10 teams playing an FCS school this year.

ACC and SEC still play 8, but I fear they will soon go to 9. Am I the only one that thinks we'll see limited chances for G5/P5 action in the future?

It's all part of the plan to increase the gap, but I think it will equally impact cross conference P5 games. There are too many lower tier P5 teams that just need chances to win. They could blackball the better G5 programs to hold them down perception wise.

I see it happening, which will make the paydays harder to come by as well. But I'm not sure it will last for a long time, because the P5 need us. Lets be honest, the odds of them beating us in most cases are pretty good. Half the P5 need wins over 3 G5 teams every year so they only have to win 3 games in conference to go bowling. If teams don't go bowling, their coaches get fired and their ADs get fired. They won't put themselves in that much jeopardy.

The key will be getting the ACC to ban FCS games.I'm sure the SEC will be the LAST P5 to ban FCS(if they EVER do).IF the ACC bans FCS it will put a little more pressure on the SEC.

I think(hope) the big12 will soon ban fcs opponents.

**Some big ten schools are playing fcs due to previous contracts.I think the very last one runs out in '18 or '19.

I think that the B12 will continue to allow FCS games as long as the SEC does. B12 tends to follow the SEC, with 9 conference game schedule being the outlier, and there's an easy explanation for that.

In order to lock in a higher tv contract rate, and to try to keep pace with SEC and B1G, B12 had to offer more content...thus the round robin. 9 game conference schedule is relatively easy though when two of those games are Kansas and Iowa State (soon to be three w/ Baylor).

I don't see the SEC going to 9 conference games unless the TV partners make it worth their while in the next round of negotiations. That guaranteed October/November home game vs FCS allows for 7/8 game home schedules and a "guaranteed" victory. The SEC West likes getting all 7 teams bowl eligible

yeah, I don't see the SEC going to nine games unless their hands forced... because they know that no matter who they're playing, they're getting prime TV real-estate.

As 15 says, they like getting as many teams bowl eligible as possible, so forcing another conference game hurts that opportunity even more.

RE: Power 5 and 9 game conference schedules
IMHO the CFP pairings, seedings, etc. and the way it is setup with ONE of the P5 being left out EVERY year will cause the big 12 or the acc to change.

They will look for ways to bolster their rating in any way possible. Here is a list of choices they have:

--play a 9 game conference schedule(some are already)

--schedule mandates to play one or more P5 out of conference(some are already)

--forbid or limit FCS games(this option is a little easier-why it could become more common)

--conf. champ. game(most are already)

The only other solution I can see(to keep all five P5 happy) is to consolidate into FOUR P5 leagues OR expand the playoff to Eight teams.

Whichever P5 conference that is left out each season is going to gripe and stomp their feet!

Members of those conferences will be pressured into one or all of the actions listed above.
