If FIU was in lightly recruited rural areas like Huntington, Hattisburg, Ruston, etc. they would get no P5 home games.

If FIU was located in an area like Huntington, they'd still be FCS.

If FIU was located in an area like Huntington I would be on here bitching about folks not respecting our 1 CUSA championship in ..., in ..., in forever. 05-stirthepot

No, if FIU was located in an area like Huntington, you'd still be FCS, if you had football at all.

You'd be a 51 year old university in a city of ~50k and a decently sized small metro.

You wouldn't have 55k students, you wouldn't have a ~$175M endowment, you wouldn't have a medical school...

Being in "an area like Huntington" has nothing to do with Marshall's 1 CUSA title.

1-2 vs MT and 0-2 vs WKU in CUSA play...

He said all time record, not record in the current CUSA.

Ok, If FIU was located in Huntington, it would not be FIU but WVIU.

If FIU was located in an area like Huntington we would not be a 51 year old university because more likely than not we would have gone through a "Normal school to college to university" which would not be done in 51 years. Which means we would have had football for 100+ years and still be in a conference with Marshall & ODU & UNCC.

If FIU was located in an area like Huntington, a city of 50k, we would be the only game in town. No dolphins, canes, heat, marlins, Florida panthers. No friday night lights of St. Thomas, Booker T, Miami Central etc. We would expect our games to be well attended. FIU would be the biggest employer in the city and therefore have that loyalty.

If FIU was located in an area like Huntington, then most of our students would be from out of town. Campus would be residential. Kids will have nothing to do on weekend and weeknight and forced to sit through softball & tennis games.

We also would not have been limited in the first years of our existence to only accept students to finish their final 2 years of college because a community college didn't want to lose students. We also would not have been unable to offer graduate courses because a university did not want to lose prestige. So even though we are 51 years old, our first alums haven't much bond since this was not their first "point of college". We would not be landlocked and unable to expand to support our growing numbers because we are perceived as a threat by some.

Fortunately, FIU is not located in an area like Huntington. So we do have a medical school, a law school, and a nursing school. We do have ~$175M endowment and we are 1 of 115 R1 universities. We do have 55k students instead of a city of ~50k. We do have D1 football, a sunbelt conference title, wins over Southern Miss, UNT, WKU & MTSU. We do have a 15 year old football program and a AD that is driving away fans. MTSU in its 15th year of football was 0-2. Lost to Vanderbilt 0-69 and the powerhouse Sewanee 0-48.

So get on your soapbox, do your holier than thou act and continue the envy.

For the record,

Marshall also has a medical school. nursing school. etc.

We are also land locked right now.

At the end of the day FIU is surrounded by millions of people......millions of people who don't care lol.

Time to kick the mega commuter schools that have 9 total fans to the curb.

So why even offer football if it adds nothing to the college experience of those attending your school or the community your school serves? Seriously, there's nothing that says you have to have a football team and it's just a huge expense if no one cares.

This is what makes the UAB fiasco so interesting. It appeared for a long time that few cared about their football team, but the threat of losing it, then actually losing it, stirred up a lot of support that was obviously there, but silent and passive. It will be interesting to see if the whole situation ultimately propels them forward with continued increased attendance and financial support or if they just slip back where they were before all this happened. If it really does propel them forward, I think it could be a blueprint for schools in a similar situation. If things don't pick up at FIU they could put the continuation of the football program to a vote with the student body coupled with a fund raising/ticket purchase goal for donors and the community. Maybe the thought of losing the program would get people involved. If that doesn't do it, maybe you shouldn't have it.

I can't see FIU taking that gamble because I'm not sure a "save the program" effort is there with where the program is currently. l imagine they'll continue to bet on themselves that if they can find the right coach or land a program defining athlete at QB etc that they can explode in popularity in just a few years.

I'm not suggesting any of that will or won't happen, I'm not saying FIU couldn't turn a corner and build a program and fan base at a more incremental pace by just stringing together a long run of winning seasons, but with 55k students and a stadium that seats less than half that, if they can make going to FIU games cool, they can pack the stadium in an instant.

I make no predictions about the future of FIU football, but I can understand the administration betting on themselves.

I believe the great hairband Cinderella's "Don't know what you've got till it's gone" would make a great background track to your second paragraph.
