Minnesota State seeks admission to the NCHC
Minnesota State announced this, which implies (to me at least) they expect to be admitted.

http://mankatofreepresshockey.blogspot.c...-nchc.html

I guess the WCHA would respond by adding a school. But I'm not really sure how this would play out.

Would think Miami and WMU would try to block them. Mankato was really po'ed that St Cloud St got in and they didnt. Ariz States membership must be coming up for a vote, as the NCHC wouldn't go with an odd number.

Still view BGSU and ASU as favorites.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I honestly don't know how Bowling Green is looking at this. Personally, it sounds expensive. I realize that's a better conference, and I would rather be in a league with Miami and Western Michigan. But I'm not sure your average NCHC school is going to goose attendance from what we get now at the BGSU Ice Arena playing WCHA schools. (No offense to North Dakota, a good school that I look forward to seeing on the football field this fall.)

The exit fee for the NCHC is $1.5 mill, which is really high for a single sport conference. Miami and W Mich won't leave unless and until there is Syracuse and Buffalo hockey on the horizon.

Minn St is just making a political statement as they think they are better than SCSU.

RE: Minnesota State seeks admission to the NCHC
As far as long term WCHA members are concerned, none got screwed more than Michigan Tech. Founding member, left in 1981 but came right back in 1984.

Every other long term member is either in the Big Ten HC or the NCHC. (not counting N Mich as a long term member)

Adding Mankato to the NCHC makes sense on at least two fronts:

1) keeps good geographic pairs: WM/Miami, AZ St/CC/DU/UNO, UND/UMD, SC/Mankato
2) Mankato and St Cloud are the flagships of the MNSCU system, so it doesn't make sense to have their premier sports in separate conferences

Another DII school won't be admitted. There are rumors that Mankato has been invited to the Slummit, so their NCHC rejection might be used as a reason to go entirely DI.

Arizona or UNLV could be a dark horse choice if they start hockey. BGSU must be embarrassed to be in the WCHA with all DIIs.

UNO/UND/UMD/SDSU a.ready have strong travel between them. Miami and WMU need another MAC type team to boost attendance.

Ariz St'S new arena still hasn't been announced, so they will be playing in a pro arena when they come aboard. Right now, most of the games for next year will be in their tiny arena near campus. The Coyotes are still negotiating a new ice complex in the Tempe area, so ASU will probably tag along on that.

Alabama is still making noise that it's club team may go varsity. Tide boosters have been making the rounds looking at existing college rinks.

With UAH, Miami, BGSU and WMU, the Tide could begin a mideast league with schools such as Liberty and Lindenwood.

Link? Interesting news, they would be a good fit. Would they drop football?

It was from a Mankato St employee that is a UND grad on our board.

Imagine Minn St Mankato would have to drop football scholarships and go to the Pioneer League for that sport.

Turns out, a UND hockey reporter turned in an open records request to Mankato for any documents of communication between MSU Mankato and the NCHC. Mankato announced they had applied rather than let the reporter announce it tommorow.

Seems to me Craig T. Nelson and crew have bigger fish to fry and could compete at a higher level.

Well of course. They did win a national championship beating West Texas in the Pioneer Bowl. Hayden Fox is a fantastic coach.

Well, for what it's worth, if Duluth, Mankato and St Cloud all are in the NCHC together, and all decide to drop football (among other sports) and go the Nebraska-Omaha route to becoming DI + DI hockey, then I know the perfect conference for them to land as basketball!

Why would Mankato State drop football? They are very successful in football in recent years, and is a powerhouse at D2. They could become the next North Dakota State in the FCS.

Mankato is basketball first, hockey second and fb third. Mankato area is not particularly hockey mad. The Vikings have their training camp there so that is their fb fix.

Mankato would drop scholarship fb, not fb itself, to go DI, as the MN St schools do not have money or endowments. Historically, Mankato has had to drop levels because their fan support was low.

They have a new BB arena because of the TWOLVES owner.

MSU-M has been picking up the top DII talent that used to go to UxD and xDSU back in the North Central Conference days. That formula won't work for DI FB (except maybe Pioneer League).

The Minnesota State Screaming Eagles had a good football team in the late 80's and early 90's under Coach Hayden Fox.

There's just no way that that happens, Miami and WMU aren't paying $1.5 million to leave one of the strongest hockey conferences for one made up of callups and startups. Honestly the only way Miami leaves is if we create a pseudo-CCHA made up of Miami, BG, WMU, and other midwestern schools like Notre Dame with maybe a strong startup like Syracuse thrown in there.
