I'd rather see us spend more on assistant coach salaries than 4 different jerseys and 3 different pants. While we have a great Nike deal thanks to Coach Laycock's relationship, it's not as if they will through 4 sets of uniforms at us for free. The classic look that we have is sharp and just fine with me.

Apples and oranges. Didnt say get 4 choices. Do we have a "great Nike deal" or just a Nike contract?

Im sure there is a budget for uniforms and an occasional redesign. When a mock-up already exists and the team says "make it like the one in the picture," I have a hard time believing that is a significant expense. Sheesh...it's ok to go out to eat once in a while, even if you have a mortgage.

We have a GREAT Nike deal relative to other FCS deals. It is way more than a "Nike contract". We don't have Alabama's.

I don't have the specifics on great Nike deals, but I'd venture it is pretty good for the fcs level. Laycock and Nike have been together for a long time and his all-pro summer camp features the top Nike NFL talent. There aren't many camps that the Nike athletes are required to attend. W&M is one of them.

Also, many of the CAA schools are making the jump to Under Armour because it is financially a better deal for them. Tribe football is not. Makes me think that they are pleased with the arrangement.

I worked for the football team for a bit. The Nike deal is fantastic, not just from a uniform/equipment standpoint but its also a fantastic perk for incoming coaches. Its easily on par with G5 (and maybe some lower P5) schools.

While I am happy that WM has a great many perks wrt this Nike deal, I fail to see how that prohibits experimentation at any level of uniform changes, season over season, when they are still Nike. I would imagine that it is quite normal to evaluate the uniform periodically and give a yea/nay vote on taking up minor design changes.

Re the post above: I always wondered how Laycock managed to get so many NFL studs to his camp year after year. I assume that his special relationship with Nike is mostly just due to longevity? You can build up a good relationship over almost 40 years. Otherwise, there is nothing special about W&M to excite Nike's special interest.

When the announcement came out that W&M was switching to Under Armour for all sports, it did say that the football team would not switch immediately because of a preference/contract with Nike. However, the implication (at least, that is how I read it) is that even the football team would switch when the current Nike contract ran out. The posts above, though, lead me to believe that the football team will certainly continue to use Nike as long as Laycock is still on campus. Anyone on the inside able to clarify this definitively?

Lastly, concerning uniforms, I just wish they would switch back to the dark green helmets with the gold (or white) "W & M" on the side. Much, much better than the gold helmets and the "Tribe" that has been in use for a number of years now.

If anything, I think our relationship with Nike would help us if we are looking for some design changes. I'm not sure the desire is there from the staff though.

We also have (had?) a W&M alum at a high level within the Nike organization. I'm sure that is a contributing factor.

I can't disagree more about the helmet color though. Our helmets should absolutely stay gold. I wouldn't mind seeing the block "WM" on the side though instead of the Tribe wordmark.

My guess is "until the Nike contract runs out" means until Laycock retires. No chance football changes unless Nike removes support. I would think, if Nike willing, the next coaching staff would like to continue this arrangement.

I get the whole school recognition thing, but personally, I like the Tribe script over the W&M on the helmets. To me it is distinctive and recognizable. I wouldn't be opposed to trying out the green helmets again, but I love the classic green uni/gold helmet/gold pants look.

I think the only uniform changes I'd make is perhaps tweeking uniform pin striping and/or fonts to liven things up while keeping a classic feel. Maybe mix in alternating between all green, gold, and white pants. Let the team captains or players of the week vote on the uniform for the following week.

Thanks to you and Zablenoise for the clarifications about Nike.

For me, "school recognition" has nothing to do with my favoring the "W & M" on the helmets. I just think the "W & M" looks way cooler than the "Tribe" does. I also hearken back to how good many of those teams were that used the green helmet with the W & M. Let's try to channel some of that mightiness again.

There were a lot of very good Tribe football teams that wore the script on the helmet; I'm thinking specifically of the offensive juggernauts of the late 1980s and early 1990s

With that said, I favor the W&M logo on the helmets for school recognition purposes

Maybe it's an age thing, and perhaps I'm in the minority, but the W&M helmets of the 80s/early 90s feel dated to me. I think trying out the green tribe helmets of the Tomlin era might be cool. If they can do W&M in a fresh style or a modern version of the old 70s helmet might be cool. Just slapping a W&M on this season's baseball hats came off looking like high school, IMO.

I'm all the way with you on this one. I think the "W&M" is our worst looking helmet. And it looks terrible on the baseball caps too. But I'd love to see an update of that 70s helmet you posted.

As someone who has a version of each Tribe helmet from the mid-80s (basically Green Bay Gold with green "Tribe" script) through the one just before we made the slight tweak to the "T" in Tribe script on display in his basement, I concur with mrjoolius. The Tomlin era is the best looking. Unfortunately I didn't have the correct Tribe script decal when I did that one so the white doesn't have a quite thick enough white border but still looks good nonetheless.

RE: New Tribe Logo
Who is responsible for selecting our jersey styles? Under Armour or our AD or coaches?

Would love to have our BBall unis reflect something similar to this instead of our usual blah patterns. I think our color scheme just works better with simple designs.

That being said, the new W&M logo is growing on me, we usually just have the proportions off, with the script too small on a jersey/shirt.

That doesn't stick out like a sore thumb or anything. Hope the green fades and blends in with the rest of the field. Would have preferred to wait until a whole field replacement or at the very least replace sideline to sideline between the 40 yard lines.

RE: New Tribe Logo
If you haven't received your season tickets yet, just wait until you see the high impact packaging in which your tickets arrive
that stunningly uses the new W&M logo...actually leaving you with, in addition to the tickets and parking pass, a small W&M poster. Great job by the athletic department, adding some bizazz to a usually mundane event.

And, by the way, moving to the W&M logo on the helmets, instead of Tribe, is absolutely required. In photos and on tv you must remember most people have no idea who the Tribe is (unless they think of the Cleveland Indians!). I also like that the name "William and Mary" now appears on the front of the jersey. Somebody is finally using Marketing 101...identify your product.
