Canadian Olympic Trials (Track & Field)
After prelims in the javelin, Evan Karakolis is in 3rd place with a best of 68.70 meters. The two ahead of him now (Nielsen and Krzyszkowski) both have launched season best throws.

He needs 83 meters to qualify for Rio - going to need a huge throw at this point.

Clutch! He wins on his final throw (71.77 meters)! Not enough for the Olympic Games, but a Canadian championship!

Congrats. Pretty tough standard. I only see one American past that mark this year so I'm guessing there won't be many Olympic javelin participants in Rio. Hopefully he'll at least be able to represent Canada in some other prestigious competitions in his track and field career. He's pretty young for a javelin thrower.

From a Bleacher Report article on the U.S. Olympic trials (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/26501...d-schedule):

Quote:
Code:
Place    Athlete    Result (Meters)
1    Cyrus Hostetler    83.24
2    Curtis Thompson    82.88
3    Riley Dolezal      79.67
4    Sam Crouser        78.06
5    Sam Humphreys      76.00
6    Robert Robbins     73.42
7    Timothy VanLiew    72.15
8    Capers Williamson  70.97
9    Damien Odle        70.49
10   Christopher Carper 69.66
11   Sean Furey         69.45
12   Carson Fuller      68.94

Cyrus Hostetler was the only thrower to secure qualification for the Olympic team on Monday, though Sam Crouser and Sean Furey had already booked their places earlier in the year after meeting the required distance elsewhere.

RE: Canadian Olympic Trials (Track & Field)
Not sure where Bleacher Report gets its info but I've seen two other 2016 top times lists that have just one American over that standard (and just 28 people worldwide although some of them might not qualify because for instance I think 4 of the 28 are from Germany?). It's possible they qualified in 2015?

I do see the Bleacher Report article indicates the 2nd place finisher at the USA Trials broke a 16-year-old Trials meet record (which was then bettered by the winner). Yet, he's not going to Rio. Again, it's a very tough standard.

Karakolis is currently the #72 ranked thrower worldwide in 2016.

The qualifying period began May 1, 2015. Sam Crouser threw 83.33 on August 1, last year, and Sean Furey hit 83.08 on June 25, 2015.
