Traditions Around the Belt
[Image: JHDnxdD.jpg]

Georgia Southern held its 69th Annual Watermelon Cutting today with new President Jaimie Hebert leading the ceremony. Since I don't know hardly anything about other Sun Belt schools traditions, I thought it'd be good off season banter to discuss some favorite traditions or Gameday traditions at your university. ANNDDDDD...go!

I propose we switch to this.

I support cutting as much RED as possible out of Statesboro!

People rub the nose on our panther statue to bring good luck. So many people have rubbed it that the nose is a different color than the rest of the statue.

That just seems unsanitary!

But now that I think about it we take a dip in a drainage ditch so...carry on.

We're starting a new tradition of useless angry ranting followed by a short drive to Pullman to watch a school that gives a crap.

We have a similar tradition but it involves rubbing the underside of the Stallions statue

At App State there's a tradition* about rubbing the founder's bell for good luck on tests.

*Pretty sure the story about "generations of students" is a modern fabrication, but it makes for a good story and the tradition has seem to have stuck around.

I'll let AppManDG fill you in on the story about the Victory Bell as soon as he finishes throat-punching a pack of nuns, kicking a Boy Scout troop in the shins and telling a kindergarten class about Santa Claus... all because you had to post that. 05-mafia

What the neck was that about? I had completely forgotten about that bell thing from when I was a student at App (ah, glory years of life; to be 18-21 again...).

BTW, this shot looks like it was in front of the library from when I was a student, when it was on Sanford Mall. Did they not move it to the new one? I've never paid that close attention on my all to rate visits back to Boone.

I'm pretty sure it's in front of the old belk library still at least it was when I was on campus 10 months ago... But even that was a "recent" move. The bell was in the vacinty of IG Greer/admin building when I was in school... And before that, the old gymnasium if my memory serves me. That bell is very old... The original name for the bell was the "spirit bell". It was given as a gift by the "A" club back in 1937. The tradition to rub the bell for luck on exams goes back at least to the 1970's so "generations" would be correct. In its early years, it was rung when the football team won an away game and some folks began to call it the "victory bell" but that was never it's official name. It either been called the "spirit bell" or "founder's bell" in its "official" capacities.

That's a cool statue....but the "tradition" just screams "sick joke" in there somewhere...

Someone started that tradition at GS in 2006 but was run out of the state of Georgia for it.
