Yeah and SMU would have stayed in the gutter which is probably where they are returning.
SMU Hoops today is much different than 4 years ago.
Remember, SMU/Brown hired away Illinois State's Head Basketball Coach and made him "Head Coach in Waiting" with a VERY high Asst Coach salary now at $800,000.
He never would have come to SMU if Brown had a long-term deal.
SMU spent a ton of money building their new basketball practice facility and doing basically a complete renovation of their on-campus arena...and while the loss of 9 scholarships from NCAA Sanctions (SMU was allowed to back track 2 of those scholarships to last year's team), SMU should remain in the top half of the conf...even challenging for top spot most years...as SMU today is totally different vs what it was like just 4-5 years ago.
You could be right about SMU, but it's very difficult to change a school's DNA. About impossible to do in a 5-year span and stay within the rules of the NCAA.

Good point...and then you just have Larry Brown's name to it...where he has proven he doesn't follow NCAA Rules...but I think SMU knew something like this would happen...but if it paid off in the long-run (after sanctions/probation is over but program is in a much better place than before), they will view it as worth it.

He was the Head Coach at Illinois State and was hand picked by Brown 3-4 years ago as SMU Head Coach in Waiting...and was earning $800,000 plus.
NOTE: He never would have come to SMU if Brown signed a "life-time" deal with SMU...as almost all thought Brown might be at SMU for maybe 3 or 4-5 years tops.

RE: Larry Brown, boom outta here
Brown has spent 46 years in 14 different Head Coaching gigs. Shortest stay was one summer at Davidson, longest was 5 1/2 seasons. No real shock that he's boom outta here, especially with the NCAA firing up the torches.

I don't understand why SMU would low ball Larry Brown? That's almost as dumb as Brexit.
Brexit wasn't dumb. Brussels forces its membership countries to take in 'problematic' refugees, and gives other troublesome marching orders.
The Brits went through Brexit to regain their sovereignty as a nation, rather than be told what to do by the European version of Washington D.C.
Anybody that thinks Brexit was dumb is dumb.
Says the guy who has his location as North Korea
Says the guy who doesn't even have a location.....
