If Larry Brown wants a 5 year extension at SMU then SMU should have offered 10. Someone should be fired if true. I call b.s but anyway back to the graveyard for SMU basketball.

RE: Larry Brown is stepping down
It sucks for SMU fans no doubt, but Larry took a program that was floundering and in 4 years made them a top 25 team that had the national spotlight, played to sold out arenas, and made the NCAA tournament. Overall it was a very good investment by SMU that payed off.

Now it’s up to the staff to continue the progress. They have been handed the keys to a Porsche, they just have to figure out a way to keep from wrapping it around a tree.

Another thing about Larry, is that I don't think SMU had to worry about getting poached.

I think that becomes more of a factor now that you gave Jankovich the program.

EXTREMELY bad timing with Dixon at TCU now.

Some huge scandal must be coming. I'm grabbing my popcorn and waiting.

no, reports are brown essentially wanted to coach there till he died..smu only want 2 more years...brown said longterm or nothing and smu chose nothing

Wow. I cant believe SMU wasn't willing to offer a long term deal. Brown was getting it done at SMU.

As an SMU fan, I am always waiting for the other shoe to drop, especially in good times. I bet this isn't all there is to it- watch out for APR issues and another postseason ban.

Jank is a great coach, but he will have to work twice as hard on the recruiting trail to pull the type of players we could get under LB.

SMU will be fine with Tim Jankovich...Jank went 104-64 (.619) at Illinois State (deff not a powerhouse) and managed to lead them to 4 NITs in 5 years...he also just spent 4 years learning from an all time great.

That seems odd they wouldn't agree to a long term deal. Hell ECU gives lonher deals for basketball.

^ LOL

There is no excuse. They can speculate about everything else, but Larry Brown brought them to the dance, had long undefeated streaks, rankings, and packed their arena with celebrities and made the program a revenue maker.

Gee... Who wouldn't want that long term? Even if you are dealing with APR issues, you work that shiznit out and keep the train on the tracks.

Well, Larry does have a history. Not saying anything negative about SMU; but about Larry himself.

could Larry have just wanted out, and used the contract length as his reason?

maybe he thought that was as good as it was gonna get at SMU...

Tough news for SMU fans. Brown turned around the fortunes at SMU as much as any coach has done with a program in a few short years. It sucks that he never took SMU to the sweet sixteen or beyond.

Hopefully Yankovich can keep the program moving forward.

SMU offered to extend Brown through the 2020 season. He would have been 80 at the time the contract was up. What more could he have wanted?! Honestly, this was more about guaranteed money and stipulations in the contract than years.

True...but Jankovich has never been a HC at the level of SMU (especially where SMU is now), plus, he probably won't "bend the rules" like Brown did in the past (which another one of his Asst Coach that was forced out).

So while maybe Jankovich ends up winning with solid 3-4 star recruits...maybe he won't break NCAA rules trying to lure in 5 star recruits like Brown did...so it still can be a positive for SMU.

Larry only lured 1 5* guy that played for him in Keith Frazier, and that was a disaster. SMU's success has been done with 3* players for the most part. Shake was the first 4* SMU had out of high school, with one more coming this year in Froling. On paper, this is the most talented team SMU has had yet.
