If I'm reading the results correctly he is in 4th place and heading to the finals Saturday.

Edit: still in progress, now 6th place, top 12 advance.

How many make the team? Three?

Might only be top 2.

Yes, I was just posting this:

I think he is now in 6th based on incomplete number of jumps (Scott has had only two jumps).

Wow now he is in 2nd by 1/100 with the best score of 16.96 and has qualified. Not sure if that's mean just for the finals or made the team.

With Alejandro already making the team EMU T&F has been represented in the last 15 Olympics. Incredible.

I think he has advanced to the finals with 11 others.

RE: Donald Scott and Others go for the 2016 Olympics Qualifying
I think Scott became an automatic qualifier with 16.85M.

I'm curious how close he is to an EMU record... He has jumped over 55 feet.

I'm confused by the AQ number, him and 3 others were at or surpassed 16.85. What does that mean? I would think since the top 12 move on to the finals that it would mean something different.

Edit: I get it now, if that were his 1st jump and he met or surpassed 16.85 he could not jump again and still make it to the finals.

Yes. What the jumpers do is take their jumps until they hit 16.85M.

At that point there is no reason to continue jumping.

Jumpers who do not make 16.85M are selected based on their best jump compared to the others who did not make the AQ.

I believe a year ago, Scott set an EMU record, etc. with a jump of around 55 ft +.

I'll try to check if it is an EMU record. What the MAC record is? etc.

Great athlete, good guy, just a terrible football receiver. Hands of S-T-O-N-E. He drove me nuts more than any other player in the history of EMU football.

Renaldo Nehemiah comes to mind...would have preferred Cliff Branch (world class sprinter, U of Colorado and Raiders legend). Just goes to show playing receiver is more than just speed and athleticism, but he tried his best and is a great representative of EMU.

Wow, that you should mention "Skeets". I went to a funeral last December for someone I worked with and Skeets was there. The deceased was a collegiate star at Maryland with Skeets.

It was impressive to see the stars from the great Maryland T&F teams of the mid-70s attend the funeral of their teammate.

The deceased was all-ACC in the long and triple jump and actually followed the career of Donald Scott and indicated to me last summer he thought Scott had a chance at the Olympics.

(the deceased's daughter was a member of the EMU women's T&F team as a graduate student).

I follow T&F some, but the 70s were the glory days of U.S.A. vs. U.S.S.R. and some of the all-time greats including Bob Hayes, and when the Americans ruled the marathon (e.g., Frank Shorter, Bill Rogers, etc.) and, of course, EMU contributed some great track men as well.

I helped him (the deceased) get his daughter to EMU and indicated that EMU has an illustrious history in T&F with the Bob Parks era and moving forward...

His daughter left EMU with a MAC championship ring. :) Sue Park's team won the indoors that year and missed by ONE point of winning the outdoors as well...

I just keep thinking to myself, how different things would be if he held onto that pass in the end zone in the second half of that game with Michigan State?

You're absolutely right though, he's a great guy and a tremendous athlete.
