Congrats on the hire. Sounds like you have a solid guy there, with nice ties to the school.

From Tim Brando

Just learned of John Wildhack's hiring at Syracuse. Anyone doubting the ACC's future in television should remember this day. Impactful hire!

ACC Network! ACC Network!

Wanted to be first to say that, for some reason.

He could be a candidate to be the next commissioner of the ACC.

Is this going to be as big for the ACC as hiring Aresco was for the Big East?

LOL, I had forgot about Aresco's ties to cbs. Interesting whether Aresco's hiring has had any positive impact on the American. I dont know what type of impact the new Cuse AD's hiring will have on the ACC, but I would think that it has to be positive, whatever the impact is. The one thing that is different about this tv exec hiring that is different from Aresco and the American is that the ACC is in the process of starting an ACCN, in partnership with the company that he just left. His background and insights on this process should be a true positive for the ACC. Its like having a free consultant.

After arguing about it for a few years, I think it has. Aresco was able to secure ESPN TV slots for something like 90% of their football games and 2/3 or 3/4 of their basketball games. Sure that includes ESPN-News and a CBS-SN package, but it's miles better than what the other G5 leagues have.

(Yes, he negotiated the deal with NBC, not ESPN, but the bottom line is he got the league on basic cable TV, a lot, instead of being buried on internet-only platforms or premium cable.)

Working in higher education, I'm left to wonder what it means to be an employee under a hire like this. He'll do things for the conference, but his institution, the athletic department? His is but an electronic signature, an email copy, and assistants writing for him.

It's one of the things plaguing higher education, this "outward-facing role" thing that's all the rage. So concerned about ambassadorship that what happens within in is usually nightmarish or horribly inefficient. You'll pay the guy oodles of money, but the work, responsibility, and accountability will fall below him.

But, whatever. It's a good hire for the ACC. 'Cuse should see some good athletics fundraising and marketing from it, too. It's a shame that a member school has to hire a guy to fix what its athletic administrative overseer horribly botched, though.

Finally some one gets it. Congratulations to Syracuse for making a sound business decision. It is good to see a university not recycle some tired, fired administrator from another failed realm of academia. I applaud this decision. Hopefully it will provide real world results for Syracuse.

It's worth noting too, that when Aresco was brought in, there was still a lot of fluidity in the Big East/American conference.

It will be a positive for Syracuse and ultimately the ACC. You guys always wind up landing on your feet.

Aresco really is operating the American with one hand tied behind his back. The goal of the networks and P5 schools is to bury the likes of my alma mater as much as possible.

When schools start paying taxes, they can make "sound business decisions." They have no business making them until then. Because they aren't businesses.

I don't disagree with making daring hires, but just know that it probably wasn't cheap to get this guy's services, and, again, there's an athletic department that still needs to run underneath him. And where do those costs then go?

If higher education from this country is in my children's future, I will tell them until I expire to get someone else to pay the bill for them. What they will inherit, when schools are making *these* kind of decisions, rather than addressing the internal issues, plaguing the realm for decades now, they shouldn't be responsible or accountable for it.

Louisville basketball made a profit of $29,053,277 for 2014-15. The most in college basketball and that figure is dwarfed by the profits of some college football programs. By comparison Syracuse made a profit of over 16 million during the same year.

By anyone's definition, except The NCAA, those are businesses. I believe they should be taxed as such as well.

That's why I believe the athletic departments at universities need to be managed as a potential profit center for the university.
